Default Bottom end

OK....ive heard that you cant take a 2001 gt bottom end more than 450hp..because of the lack of a forged pistons ,rods and crank, but on you tube i see people saying that you can make more hp and torque with a proper tune.. anyone realy know for sure ..

The question is, how long will they last like that?

Sure you can make more and of course a good tune helps. there is no set number of when it's going to go although most say mid 400's. most will recommend staying in the low 400's to be safe. Really not sure why you would want to risk it for an extra 30hp. I'll stick to low 400's and a good tune before pushing the block any further. Even if you had plans to rebuild I'd rather stay away from having any catastrophic failure while driving with the chances of damaging something you weren't planning to rebuild/replace.

If you like your rods to stay in the motor then yeah don't go to high over 400rwhp.

in my experience, 360-380rwhp is about it for a bottom end that will last. 8lbs should be good enough from most blower kits to hit that. It's pretty safe with the required tuning done and can easily last 100K miles.

Click up to 400rwhp and you start seeing all the risk and very little reward. 450 is a timebomb IMO.

Actually... in point of fact, with very few exceptions (billet aluminum, etc...) all connecting rods are forged. It's a matter of what spec they used. Since they set the motor up for 7000rpm it would stand to reason that the rods in it are pretty stout. The stock cracked cap units are really strong for what they are. It'd be nice to see what rods they actually used in the new motor. I don't figure it'll be long before someone decides to shoot a couple out the side of one of the blocks and give us a view of at least a piece.

Hypereutectic pistons on the other hand are a matter of practicality. They don't rattle on cold starts and they're way cheaper apart from other manufacturer side upsides.

Unhappy crate

Youd think that ford would be kinder to the gt lol...cobras are insane with the super charger, youd think they would atleast give a gt the options to mod up and over. All im saying is that i hate the fact you cant take a 2001 gt over 450 hp...i hate it..lol..now i haft to rebuild or put in a crate motor or sell and buy a cobra ...but i have soo many mods on this car id be starting over..and after it all id be deeper in a hole.with allot less mods..although ive seen a few nice rides on ebay outta my price range atm,and then your really not sure what your gonna get.Its sooooo frustrating..

Ive had over 400rwhp horsepower on my stock bottom for awhile now, just to show a real life comparison.

In Sept of 07 I installed my Procharger with 13-14 lbs and settled for around 405rwhp/415rwtq. Ran out of fuel.

In October 08 I installed the Cobra tank and double pumps and retuned. I ended up with 463/440.
This car is not my daily driver. I am prepared to buy a shortblock should something happen. Sees only about 5-8k per year, but I do drive it hard when I drive it. So much depends on the quality of the tune. SGS Performance and Dave Guy FTW!

One other thing to consider is the newer mustangs 05-09 utilize the same rods and I've seen lots of those cars approaching 500hp to the wheels. My buddy has an 06 with a Whipple and has 498/474 since Oct '08.

The bottom line is don't push it to the limits if you cant afford to fix it.

There's a guy I always see at the drag strip with his whipple charged 2008 Bullitt. He also has the steeda 10 rib system on it. He said after he put that on his boost went from 11 to 13 and his car is putting down 520hp to the wheels with conservative timing. He is always at the drag strip with it too. I wonder when it will blow..I met him back in January and have seen him at least 6-7 different times at the the 1/4 mile.

the tune is the token but you're still overpowering the bottom end if just by a tad.

I'm at 442 and 425 to the ground with a tune by Gearheads in Arlington and it's just fine. This with a D1SC putting down about 9psi...

the big factor is the tune, a good tune will dictate the outcome in many cases. The main weak link in our motors is the rod and pistons, emphasis placed on the good ole powdered rods. the stock crank is actually not bad and unless you plan on going over 500hp, forged rods and pistons should suffice.
