Default 4.6L head castings

I was in a discussion with someone earlier and they tried to tell me that left and right PI heads are interchangable so long as you flip the cam. Is this true? I thought that left heads only fit the left side and right heads only fit the right side. I am only curious however we did put a little money on it. Thank you

The water passages will not line up if you flip flop them.

also the cam gears will never work on the back side of the heads and you would have a hell of a time trying to get the front cover back on

well i dissagree go take a close look at some heads and u will notice one allen plug that has to moved from front to back i have done this with zero problems ford cast one head and puts one plug in to make it right or left just go look closely

i think twin turbo is correct although my experience is not great. i think you just have to reconfigure a part or two (ithink the allen plug is for an oil gallery) and you can swap side to side. i'm sure the intake manifold gaskets can swap side to side. the water passages do line up, just turned a 180.

What about the timing chain cover? I dont think that the reverse side of the head has the proper mating surface to make a tight seal. And would the bolts in the valve covers still line up??

i THINK the castings are completely symmetrical meaning if you move the oil plugs everything else will bolt right up
