Question 3:73 gear verification ?

ok, i just had 3:73 gears installed in my 08 gt. yes, i can tell a difference,a pretty good diff. BUT,, i just want to make dam sure that they put those 373's in. Somewhere on this board, i read on how to tell what gear ratio you have, by jacking up ur rearend and turning ur wheels, and looking at the drive shaft and seeing how many times or how many revolutions ur d.shaft turns, and that will tell you X-ACTLY what you have. Does anyone remember that thread, or can you refresh MY memory on how to check ur rearend gear ratio useing that method.

I'm probably wrong but, with every rotation of the tire, the drive shaft should spin 3.73 times (~4 times). You can count the teeth but that would require you to take the diff. cover off.

Maybe you shouldn't have been a wimp and put in 3:73's......

3.73's FTL.....

4.10's FTMFW!!!!

Seriously 3.73's on an S197 are useless. Our transmission has the gears so stretched out that you can barely feel it....

That's correct. You could also turn the driveshaft one full revolution and if the wheels rotate by about 1/4 of a turn, you have 3.73 gears.

Put a mark or piece of tape on your driveshaft and a mark on one of the rear tires. Have a friend SLOWLY rotate the marked rear wheel 1 full turn, while you watch and count the turns of the driveshaft. If its a 3.73 gear ratio, your driveshaft should turn 3.73 turns......or by eyeball, a little less than 4 full turns.

I actually feel a good difference. And i like it. I do know when i drop it in low/1st and put my foot in it, GOOD GOD ALL MIGHTY WHOOA ! and of course, that is both due to my vortech s/c & 3:73's. i'm Happy. When my warranty runs out, Then the Mod bug will come back.

Or just use an rpm calc and go to a set speed in 5th gear and see if it matches what it should be running. Just put in your tire size and what rear gear ratio you want to see and look at the 4th gear speed at the bottom (because the 5th gear on this calc is setup for a different tranny) and then you will know for sure.
