Default Header installing question

I just called a local popular mustang shop and asked what it would cost me to get headers installed on a 2002 mustang gt if I have the headers and they said 950.00 Holy ****

I installed my own headers on my bird in my driveway and it took a couple of days but it only cost me a couple busted knuckles and some sleep but not 950.00. So I'm asking how hard are mustang headers to install in a driveway with just ramps and jacks? and does anyone have any instructions on header installs?

i never did a header install on a mustang but i have on a LS1 TA and i think that was a cake walk compared to what people describe on this board.

if i were to do this job i will drop the k-member support the motor with a jack stand and make a brace that goes from strut tower to strut tower and wrap a cargo strap around the motor to secure it and go to town on the header install.

its alot of work to do headers on a 4.6. you have to either drop the k-member or raise up the motor. that quote does seem a little high though. they probably just dont wont to do them.

I tried just raising the motor, and then just dropping the K, only to realize that I really needed to do both. It sucked, I'll never do it again. Well, honestly I think it would be MUCH easier to just raise the car, pull the motor (and trans), do the headers, then drop the motor (with headers and trans attached) back into the car. This is what I'm going to do to put new header gaskets on and replace my clutch. Again, this will probably be MUCH easier than not pulling the motor. Good luck.

That estimate sounds a bit high. If you take your time and have a buddy (or two) helping out it's not that bad. Definately drop the k member. Getting that back up is actually the most difficult part. Once it is down and the engine is supported with jack lower the engine sligtly. Unbolt stock headers, bolt up new ones and put everything back together. Oh and before you try ripping out the oil dipstick tube spray some lube on it. It's in there pretty good, my buddy broke his and had to wait until monday to get a new one at the dealer. We started mine on a friday night getting the brakes and suspension off then finished on saturday. Took about 12 hours total with a few breaks and lunch.

If your doin l/t it is almost a must to drop the k-member so it will have to be on jack stands. Where are you in MD? Me and a buddie did his hookers in about 3hr start to finish(with a lift).

That sounds more like it, but I would still do it myself!

I payed 450 for the install 300 for a handheld tuner and 300 for a dyno tune. I was quoted 6 hours for the install at $75 an hour for labor.

I plan to just do it myself. I did to longtube installs but they were both on trans am's. The only thing were stuck on right now is either having my friend chop cut and fab her existing prochamber h-pipe or just buying a new prochamber longtube h-pipe for 250.00 shipped.

i'm looking at some o2 extenison what length would I need? 12" or 24" or does anyone know a site I can get them from for a mustang
