PI heads for a 98 gt
i was just wondering how many extra parts i would need to put 99+ pi heads on my 98 gt. Also i was wondering how labor intensive it is to put on pi heads. any comments and or pictures will help a bunch. thanks

no but i was looking on the internet and i have found a few places that i could get them for pretty cheap. they come with the cams and gear but i was wondering what other stuff i might need

well first off stay away from Windsor heads as it will cost more to use them on a Romeo engine. second, look for the intake wth the improved aluminum cross-over. after you get those parts, you'll need gaskets, bolts, tubes, O-rings and some other misc parts and your looking at @$500.00 for all that. as far as install, I've seen anywhere from $500.00 to $1000.00 for doing the swap.

if you know what you're doing in general.. it's a solid days work, maybe 2. If you have a friend to help it's a good weekend deal but I'd have a week available in case something doesn't work right... or take it to a shop and spend the grand to have them do it.

i was wondering if i bought those 2002 pi heads what all specifically would i need to get? i kow id need a new intake but im just trying to add up how much all this is gonna cost and start rounding up the parts now. also, would i have to get it tuned after i put the heads on? gotta crunch the numbers cause im on a tight budget at college.
#15
you should get a tune to maximize the combo. well just and FYI, heads are between $200.00 and $400.00 each, intake is between $150.00 to $250.00 and the misc gaskets, tubes, o-rings bolts and misc other stuff is @$500.00 and labor is anywhere from $500.00 to $1000.00 then add @$350.00 to $500.00 for dyno time and a tune, oh and while its apart, it's a good time to install headers, @$500.00 a set for long tubes

hey would this kit pretty much cover all the misc things i need besides the intake?

would i be able to drive my car without getting it tuned or would it damage the engine? i know i wont see as much of a gain without a tune but is it safe to drive it without getting it tuned?
#19
I never had mine tuned after my pi swap but it would help alot. The car was like a totally different beast afterward but it only was a few weeks before i ordered the VT heads/Cams Now that isn't enough so i'm working on a blower combo.

water pump 0-ring, coolant tube under the intake, front crank seal, crank bolt, coolant, rh exhaust down-pipe gasket, oil and oil filter and I would get ALL the gaskets, even if they are re-usable. nothing like being in the middle of a job on saturday night only to find the cam cover gaskets is dammaged or missing and you have to wait 3 or 4 days toget another. I tell all my customers this and to get all the parts, that way your not stuck in the middle of the job and when your done, just return the un-used parts for a re-fund.

If they gaskets were close to new, i would reuse them, but not old with lots of miles on them. The coolant tube, you can reuse yours. it should have a hose though, that goes to the back of the water pump. i would just replace that short hose. The crank bolt is reusable so i wouldn't worry about that. you can reuse the thermostat bolts also. i would get the heater hoses, but there's nothing special about them or runner length with the intake. I have bought a brand new FRPP PI intake but bought heater hoses for a 97 stang and they work perfect, but get the pre molded ones, not the cut to fit. if you reuse your alt, don't need the bracket, your stock one will work. If you get PI heads with cams and gears on them, don't need the cam bolts. all the other stuff and stuff others said, you need.
get some gasket sealer too.

the above info is not correct and should be avoided. the new and improve PI intake will require a new style alt brkt, the metal coolant tube under the intake is different for PI car vs Non-Pi cars as is the nipple for the water pump, intake runner length is different between Pi and non-Pi, crank and cam bolts ARE TTY so they should be replace. do not cut corners like in the post above, get the right parts and do the job right the first time.

When you do the swap, you'll see. don't buy extra when you don't need it.

whatever dude if you installed a PI intake wth a non-pi metal coolant tube, well congrats as your the ONLY person that has done that, everyone else I know of has had to change to the PI coolant tube & nipple as the non-pi tube bends the wrong way and wont clear the Pi intake runners same wth the alt brkt
when you do the swap, get everything, you dont want to be caught short on completing the job and have to cut-corners

And same goes for the alt bracket. if you use the stock one, you also still have a place to put your spark plug wires on, the newer style don't have that. and it will bolt on.
First pic shows my stock 97 tube. pic two shows my stock 97 alt bracket on a New FRPP PI intake with aluminum crossover.
And i don't cut corners, especially when the part store is a 3 min drive from my house, and i don't halfa$$ anything.
