Default Underdrive Pulleys

Are there any pro's and con's between different brand underdrive pulleys? I saw on this site the March underdrive pulley's are a lot cheaper than the Steeda underdrive pulley's. Is one better than the other? I have a 03 GT 5-spd if tht makes any difference. Thanks

I personally think there is no difference in power if any! I think with the steedas your just paying a little extra for the name!

Steeda and March make NON piggyback pulleys now.Whichever ones you get make sure you only get NON piggyback pulleys.Piggyback pulleys need the old crank pulley bolted to the new underdrive crank pulley to have the benefits of a harmonic balancer.You need the harmonic balancer!!!If you want to use a timing adjuster in the future you must use NON piggyback pulleys.

Ive got piggyback Marches on mine i got for $50 shipped off ebay. According to my Gtech Performance Meter. I picked up 14hp, and 2/10ths off my quarter. And the motor did rev quicker in neutral. I never believed in underdrive pullies, till i bought them on a deal. The were worth it. Ive got a decent Stereo with a 900 watt rms 6 channel Kicker AMP, and no charging problems.

Also of course Non piggyback are better, I called march asking if they would just sell me the crank pully, Since reading on here and other forums that piggyback is no good. According to the tech guy, no ones called with any failures, and ive not seen anything on any forums where piggybacks have hurt a motor. And the March Tech guy talked me out of it and said save my money, Unless im running a 8000rpm + circle track car at sustained high rpms for hours at a time.

my f150 went a tenth faster with steeda pulleys, i'm sure the stang will go more sense she weights less.

If they weren't needed why would a cost concious Ford put them on the 4.6 used for daily driving.The thing wrong with piggybacks is the fact that you mount the old crank pulley to the new underdrive pulley.This is just more weight on the crank to get spinning,and it's ugly.

I installed a steeda one on my neighbors 2002 gt. It was actually heavier then my piggyback March one

Of course a non-piggyback pulley is heavier than a piggyback pulley,it has the harmonic balancer already built in.I'm talking about the weight of the old crank pulley bolted to the new piggyback pulley.This is a prime example of "less is more".

you need the installation bolt and a harmonic balancer pulley puller. which you can rent at auto zone etc...

as for cooling problems etc.. i never had a problem with mine on my truck. i dought anyone will have a cooling problem as we have electric fans and that pretty much cures the over heating problem.

No im talking with it all bolted together. They piggyback put together is lighter that the non piggyback model.

And also back in the day with Vdrive belts, Ive seen a lot of cars with piggyback from the factory, Running different accesories. But yes you are 100% right. If buying new and the very little difference between piggyback and non. Dont get the piggyback.

Im still actually surprised that i did get that much of a gain out of them. This is the first set of underdrive pullies ive ever bought and this is my 9t mustang. I never believed in them. I could never believe those 12-15hp gains always advertised, But i found 14hp

$169 i see them for on here id say they are worth it for the non piggy back. Of course if i had the choice on the same price id get the non piggyback. As i said. I paid $50 shipped.

I had a hell of a time getting the steeda on. Even with Doing the heating it up in boiling water trick. Luckely i had a longer bolt at my house from my March kit, and some washers. If you are putting the steeda on Its a super tight press fit almost on your crank. Put the crank pully in boiling water and get it hot. And then i took some canned air and turned it upside down and blasted the whole can on the front crank snout.
