California cars
I have a CA 2001 GT. What kind of bolt on mods can I do to my car that WILL make some more HP? It seems to me that the guys on the dyno forum aren't getting much power from all the bolt ons they have on thier car. What does that mean to me haveing a CA car with all the smog restrictions?
Are cat back systems and cold air kits just for sound and looks. What about pullies and bigger throttle bodies, are they a wise expense?
I think I'll buy a Tuner, those seem to work according to the articles I've read. But then again, I shouldn't believe everything I read.
Any thoughts out there. Can someone help me out with my Cal Mustang?
Thanks, Mark M :wallbash:

Diddnt feel the K&N FPIK CAI, sorta felt the diablo tune, diddnt really feel much with the exhaust, but the gears i DEFINATLY felt.
Best upgrade for price you can do.
Remember, with about 230RwHP stock, 9hp increase is really only like .5% increase in power....
Gears give you no more HP, but you will feel them WAY more than any single bolt-on. Ive heared swapping to 4:10's can take off about 1/2 second on the 1/4 mile on a good day, but i dont have first hand exp on that.
If you plan on blowing yer car, go with 3:90s instead of 4:10 for traction purposes.

you should get gears for seat of pants feel and cat back for sound. if you have a automatic get a aftermarket valve body for those hard shifts, 3000-3500 locking stall, and a tranny cooler. those mods will make your car feel a lot faster then just adding pullies, t/b, plenum, exhaust.

Yes, gears gears gears! I live in Cali and let me tell you there aren't a whole lot of things you can do without messing with the emissions. The but great thing about boltons are that they can be removed and replaced with the original parts!
You'd be fine with the pullies, K&N FIPK II (CARB certified), and catback. In Cali we aren't supposed to have aftermarket X/H pipes even it they have cats, however many of us do and just put the stock H pipe on when it's time to get it smogged. The intake plenum and throttle body are the same way, just keep your original parts.
Your not going to get any big HP gains out of any of the boltons you mentioned, maybe 3-5-8 hp....Maybe....but it also all adds up in the end. Also, the tuner is a good idea because you can get a little extra HP, adjust your A/F, timing, and correct your speedo for the gear change.
In the end I wouldn't worry about smog and with those minor boltons cause you can always put your original stuff back on.

Stanger, who sells a after market valve body for my auto trans? I've looked everywhere and can't find it. Your talking about a shift kit or something like that, right?
The predetor tuner is suppose to help firm up the shifts. But I have not been able to find some kind of shift kit like for the old school auto trannys.
I did see an ad in a magazine that sells beefed up trannys like the one I have with manual valve bodies in them for racing, but they cost $2200. Mark M

edit yes a shift kit is what im talking about but it is already put together for you. all you have to do is drop your tranny pan and take out the old valvebody and put in the new one.

Stanger, is the tranny in my 01 stang called a E4ODE? Because if it is, I just found a unit at Jeg's. It's an electronic shift improver made by Jet. And it has 4 different settings of shift firmness. Stock, stage 2,3 and 4. It's $114. Not bad.
But will this unit work like a manual valve body so I can shift manually through the gears? Mark M
P.S. I'm a newbie to modern hot rods. This is the first fuel injected and computer controlled mustang I have owned. I'm 42 and from the old school when carburators and other bolt ons and mods did make good extra hp.
