School, Sheriff, PD

School, Sheriff, PD
Just want to get some opinions of this situation.
I am going to be a police officer at santa clara pd after i complete my last two years of college (where i have dreamt of working since i was little because my dad worked there). But because of this recockulous budget crisis i have had to put a year on hold for retarded reasons. I have a fulltime job as a renta cop and i have been debating whether to apply to be a sheriff deputy because i already meet the requirements for that. Work there for two years and then lateral over to the pd. Only reason why i have bene debating this is because i have been keeping track of the universities i want to transfer to and classes are so ******* overcrowed and so many students are getting fucked over I could skip the last two years, be a sheriff and then lateral over to the scpd.
Thoughts/advice/opinions??

I think thats a good start considering you will be making nice pay as a sheriff. My friends ex was a Contra Costa sheriff and with overtime, he was making over 100K a year. I say go for it especially if you can get into it now. You can always finish the degree later.

I say go for it! I'm not sure about Santa Clara County, but in Alameda and Contra Costa County the rookie deputies work in the jails for a few years before hitting the streets. If you don't mind that then go for it.

Do it now while you can. It took me a year and a half to get in to the Eastern Shore Criminal Justice Academy. I worked in a small town for awhile but just recently moved up to a much bigger department. IMO.... take the Deputy position and move on from there.

its a good move and kinda bad. every officer including one being the head chief of lodi police told me it was tough getting their masters and all due to making time for school. also, our state is in major crises in cutting public service and let the ones with less experience go and also law enforcement is ahead of most, if they need to cut their budget. does your city do the cadet program in which you work for the department while you go to school full time?

A lot of PD's around here hire local deputies to fill in the overtime gaps but not vice versa. I'd seriously go sherrif. Besides... city cops have jurisdiction issues and do the crappiest police work to be had... deputies don't have to deal so much with that since their area is huge and the crime is more varied.
When I was in the academy it was mandatory that you take a cadet role at the PD which usually meant filing reports and making coffee and doing ride alongs and traffic control. Suck sauce and it didn't pay at all.
A note, deputies around here tend to start by spending 2 years as a jail guard. If you can take that then it's a solid route with gobs of overtime available and a better funded department.
Remember where you came from when you pull me over.
