Default New Z06 505hp 7.0L V8

What do you guys think? The Shelby Cobra needs a SC and doesnt come close. Are we comparing apples to oranges? http://www.forbesautos.com/gallery/2...e/?partner=aol

Unfair comparo, but inevitable. The Vette is $25k more expensive than the GT500. I would prefer a GT and Harley for the price of the Vette. Plus, my kids can ride in the back of the Vette.

Some guy blew the doors off of me from a light in one of these. I did not even try...I just sat there and waited until he was about 200 yds away - LOL. The thing sounded amazing.

Thats not even apples to oranges, thats like apples to eggplant...I have to admit, they are awesome, but think about it, 7.0 liters isnt hard to get good power out of. Think of the Chevelles and muscle cars of the earlier days. Also remember the fact that the cobra weighs almost 4k pounds...thats our biggest problem, we are pigs.

i like fords, but there are some chevy's that i wouldnt mind to have. The new z06 for example, and a camaro that has to race froma roll 70, because 1-3 is spinning tires....

The cobra is probably underrated at 450 hp. can you imagine the power that you would be putting down if you spent 65000 on the cobra + mods? You would be waaaaaaayy over 500 hp.

If I had that kinda cash and wanted a toy Id lean towards the vette. Its pretty much a track car for the street.

vettes have always been ugly in my eyes.

you could put well over 500 hp in a cobra and spend way less than 65,000

yeah i'd rock a z06 in a second. I'd also have an LS1 camaro. But hey i drive a mustang. I'm getting a pretty good bang for my buck if you ask me. Have you guys seen the new Camaro that's comming out? I kinda like it. But i think i might have to do the Shelby over that one.

Vettes are nice but I would prefer a Sting Ray or a vette pre Sting Ray. I don't know how it is where you guys live, but here in Pensacola, Florida if you drive a Vette you have to be 60 or older. In my eyes from 98+ they turned into an old people car and I get stuck behind them all the time doing 50 in a 55 or exactly 70 on the interstate. BOO!

The new Vette Z06, and for the last two previous Z06's (385hp and 405hp versions) are amazing automobiles. You get an incredible amount of car for the money (there are more to cars then just Horsepower and fast 1/4mile times.) This thing will hang with the best that Europe or the rest of America has to offer.

As far as comparing the Vette to the GT500....there different vehicles in different classifications. The Z06 Vette is a response to the Ford GT and Viper...not meant to be in the same catagory as the GT500.

But I can promise you the GT500 is underrated. Slap a Pulley on the GT500 and you'll be at 505 without batting an Eye.

Bolt on 03/04 Cobra's make 500+ to the wheels. Imagine what a 5.4L with the best Cylinder heads ever produced from Ford, indestructible internals, and a Factory Twin Screw Supercharger...not a roots like the previous Cobra.

We're talking over 600rwhp with bolt ons. The horsepower wars are going to get nasty folks...fasten your damn seatbelts.

That car is awsome! The I can make more HP for way less than what I would spend for a z06 is old! HP is not the only reason people buy cars. And yeah, i bet a modded GT500 would blow the doors of the new zooh...but wait, you mean there isn't an aftermarket world out there for vettes

He's right, you buy a vette to be able to say you have a vette. Same gooes for being able to say you have a stang, I'd rather have a stock gt than an 11 second honda. I don't know about you guys but you never see a vette in my town ripping up the pavement, they are all in slow cruise mode. Personally, if I had $65,000 I'd pay my mustang off and buy a 1969 Z28 302. My boss at work has an all original 1969 pace car convt. white with orange stripes and orange int. It is freekin sweet!

Or $65,000 in lottery tickets....

did you even read the posts above? that's been said about 4 times. btw if i put $25k into my gt i'd beat the vette too. im sure you could probably put that much into a taurus and beat a vette. im sure everyone here has seen the minivan that will beat most of the cars on this forum.

Very well put, hell, anything can be fast if you throw enough money into it! Has anybody seen that fast *** nitrous scooter blowing the doors of a H/C/I t/a?.....

Default Comparo

Chevy: 3130# (real chunky for a 2 seat sports car w/ a tiny trunk)
505hp (427 7.0 litre is a big old engine - it BETTER put out the power)
6.3 pound/hp (good number, no doubt about it)
$65,800 (!!!!! lets see, thats about 2 trash bags full of dollars...)
Handling is great, but remember its the 05 Stangs kicking butt on the
track (including vettes, porsche, bmw, and a few firebirds too)
Insurance cost - almost unimaginable

Ford: 3850# (heavy for sure - but it has a back seat and useable trunk)
475hp (600hp+ with a 5 minute pulley change and retune)
8.1 pound/hp (6.3 or better with a pulley change)
$39,000 (absolute bargain compared to just about anything)
Handling is great, though probably not as good in stock trim as the Z
Insurance cost - about the same as my GT (high, but manageable)

Want parity with the vette? Invest $10,000 (or less - maybe much less) in motor tweaks and suspension goodies. You'll be able to run with the vette on the road course, and zap 'em on the 1/4 mile.

Take the other $16,800 you saved by NOT buying a Chevy and buy a garage to park it in.

Take the money you're saving on insurance by NOT buying a Chevy and buy your best girl something nice - like a trip to Cancun every year.

you should go out and by a 10 k civic put about another 10k in mods and you'll be spanking mustang/chevy *** all day long! Then you could be happy about saving 10k! .....when it comes right down to it, no matter what anyone says, the mustang is a low budget sports car! Hell i will gurantee you that if anyone had the money to buy either the new zooh and the new cobra, they'd go for the more classy chevy! You can say the usual bs, "i'm a ford man, and will never buy a chevy, blah, blah, blah," but it the end the vette is still a bargain for the performance it offers straight outa the factory!

Default Just might

The whole idea of this thread was to compare the zvette to the shelbie. Anyone who ignores cost in making a comparison or buying decision is either rich enough to where it doesn't matter, or dumb enough to where he shouldn't be operating power machinery. Of course, putting $10000 into a $10000 car is a more drastic event than investing in a pulley change, tuneup and some maximum motorsports bushigs to make a $39,000 car competitive with one costing about $30000 more. I left $10000 on the table just out of kindness to the vette - it would probably be an easy-enough change that it could be done in the dealer's parking lot before you took the car home with parts costing a few hundred dollars.

Anything can be made to do anything with enough money. Budget nearly $70000 for a car, and I, for one, start envisioning 2 shelbies, one to drive, and one to sit in a garage and wait a few years and see what a zero miles limited edition will bring down at the Barrett Jackson sale.

As for the 2 cars being in the same market, not so. $40000 is the going rate for a fully optioned grocery getter SUV nowadays, but $70000 puts you into another zip code altogether. It does make a difference - I for one can stretch and reach the shelbie - but 70k is just simply not going to happen, nor the $300 a month insurance payment as the cherry on top.

There are quite a few people on this forum who have cars that cost about $40000 sitting in their garage right now with "mustang" across their back bumpers, and virtually all of them could afford and desire to own the new cobra - and very few of those same guys would instead choose the zvette.

Maybe we can do a poll to see if I'm right, but I really don't think that's needed.

"Cheap sports car" is what you'll have after you put $10000 into a $10000 civic. 2003 Mustang Cobra with about 45000 miles on the clock is what I'd have.
