Is this true?
i was on a GM truck forum just now and came across a thread about catalytic converters.
i have never heard of this. i would have thought that with all of the mustangs/zo6/camaros, etc. we would have heard of such thing. i have heard people being pulled over by cops and getting in trouble but never heard of these little stations.

You may not have noticed them yet but every state (Indianna and Alabama included) has portable roadside check stations that will sniff your vehicle as it drives by, if it detects high threshholds or certain gasses they have an on board camera that snaps a picture of your license plate and in a few weeks you can expect a letter in the mail to inform you your vehicle is not in compliance with EPA clean air standards. Failure to comply or aknowledge this letter can get you a visit and mandatory vehicle inspection with a Federal court date for clear up the little matter of your vehicles emissions issues.
Dont confuse yourself these are Federal checkpoints and they will make you comply. Your state wont back you one bit if they want to continue getting Federal Highway funding.

thats horseshit.
Ive been on here for about 5 years now and I dont know HOW many people on here have run cat-less, no to mention i know probably 8-10 people directly that run offroad setups, and i have yet to hear of a SINGLE person getting nailed for it unless they were pulled over by the cops and had thier inspected with illegal modifications.
and i know what the machines are he is talking about, its that van that sits by the side of on ramps and off ramps with the sniffer sitting next to the road. My Honda's cat was cored out for about 5 months and i blow past those all day long.
to that poster, "I hate to burst yall bubble, but dont believe everything you hear"

yeah no way are they able to tell if your vehicle is emitting too much emissions as you drive buy on a highway, mainly considering it will not know if your vehicle is older or new, big or small, and whether or not it's just your cars exhaust gas or yours + who ever else is driving next to you. Sounds like a big load of BS

this is what we have. If you go past and they approve you then you dont have to get emissions later that year.
if they fail you, well, you have to get emissions when yours expires.
that guy nsounds like one of those gloom and doom morons who believes every negative thing he believes.
how nice would it be if people would spend 5 seconds on a google search rather than believe something that scares them and start spouting it out as gospel.
lol..
gm dude FTL!

There are federal requirements, sure. But all states having sniffers on the roadsides connected to cameras, omg what a freakin' moron. VA can't even afford to repave the shittiest interstate sections south of New Jersey ,much less install magic sniffer cams. That nut must sit around and brew up conspiracy theories all day in his brain scan blocking armadillo helmet.

I bet he read that in an email titled: "FW:FW:FW:FW:FW:FW:FW:FW:WARNING TO ALL CAR LOVERS" and the person that wrote the email knows it has to be true for a fact...because their friend's sister's roommate's fiancé's grandmother's chiropractor's janitor knows an LEO that told him so.

Closest thing I found: http://www.thedenverchannel.com/auto...49/detail.html
Clif Notes: Portable drive by emissions testing stations in CO...no crazy fines or nationwide conspiracy lol, just a convenience thing for people. They don't have to get their yearly test at a garage if they pass the drive by test.

Yet. In 2010 the emissions rules are going to get stricter I imagine. There is no way Florida can't have ANY emissions, that's crazy. Oh and Colorado-folks get ready for next year. Larimer and Weld Counties will finally have emissions (or so I here).

We still have to follow federally mandated laws.

There will still be garages that accept a little under-the-table cash for a sneak by. Hell that's what everyone does here. There is a Z06 down the road with just headers and a cherry-bomb on the end. Sounds like a goddamn thunder storm driving down the road. Got pulled over and the cop told him it SMELT and SOUNDED nice.
I call BS as well.
Plus the car could be like our '65 and just smell like gasoline ALL THE TIME! Running or not, it smells like fuel is just oozing out of it. And nothing leaks, it's just the way it is.
These are the same people that believe your car can be tracked through its emissions because no car is the same. Somehow a magic sniffer satellite can track your car through it's C02 output. LOL.
We're not THAT damn high tech.

The only automated system I know of that can give you tickets in my state is Illinois' I-Pass system, but that has nothing to do with emissions. I think that guy is just a nutter
EDIT: we also have vans with cameras that sit in the construction zones overnight to tell if you're speeding, but once again that has nothing to do with emissions.

Didn't "The Govenator" try to make it where the Cali Emissions Standards were nationwide? I remember hearing something along the lines of possibly switching the the Cali system by summer 2011 for around here, but I don't know if that has developed any.

Nope. The computer runs various tests to determine whether or not everything is functioning within spec, and when you clear the codes those tests are also cleared. The emissions place checks to see if those tests have been run when they check your car. Some vehicles (like my Audi) don't require that all of the tests are run though, which is why I was able to slip through with bad cats.

I hate to say it, but it's just a matter of time before other States follow Cali's lead.
