I've actually seen one of those work. At the NE Texas Technical State College (or some kind of name like that) in Marshall, TX they have one and showed me how it works and a few things that it made while I was touring.
The guy that ran the shop there, and the machines they had were amazing. He said that his mother had to have hip repalcement surgery. He told the surgeon that he wanted to see the hardwear they were going to replace the top ball of her femur and the cup of the hip because he said if it wasn't up to his standard he was going to MAKE the parts himself. Wow.

i think the whole machine cost less then $10k.
my father has a water jet machine that cuts out parts in his company. He didn't purchase it though, its a lease and when something breaks they just come in and fixes it. Same as all the pitney bowes machines he has.
