Default So my younger bro got his license today...

...and well he is looking for a car. The little **** has worked a ton since he was 14 and has saved a ton of money, but my dad wants him to save it for college. So I have been looking for a car for him.

What are your thoughts on this one?
http://detroit.craigslist.org/cto/1099959215.html

I still don't know how many miles are on it, I just emailed the guy.
I think that it wouldn't cost much to fix the dents and the the transmission.

I'd say he shouldn't spend more than $2k on his first car, but $2800 isn't too bad. I absolutely loved my first car (used Acura,) and yet I still totalled it. BTW, was he working legally at 14, or was it under the table? Around here, you can't work until you're 15 (and only with an agreement from your H.S. that says you won't work enough to interfere with your schooling.)

a kids first car should definetly be under 3grand, as long as its not a total hoopty that is going to break down on him in the middle of the road somewhere. however, i would just keep looking until you find something that has an engine and transmission that don't need to be repaired. i mean, ur brother is going to learn on this car. i know that i loved my first car, but i cracked headlights, taillights, scrapped my side mirror, three accidents, ripped a seat, etc. thank god it only cost me $2600. makes me appreciate my Gt so much more.

Michigans working age is 14.
And kids 11+ can be caddies for golf courses, and be hired as referees for sports.

This is under law of course.

...but back on topic.

Good deal? I'm not familiar with foxes or how good these 5.0 are/will last.

I'm sort of wondering that, too. In my town the law is 16.

He deserves a decent looking/running car that isn't a total piece. I mean the kid worked his butt working on a farm, in a restaurant, and even cutting other people's lawns.

This thread reminds me of the lack of 5.0 guys on these boards.

well dude, i know a lot of fox body guys from my local club, and the foxes are a poor mans sports car. they are fun and cheap, and their are many cheap parts out there. however you need to do regular and constant maintenance on them. every other day i hear about a guy needing to swap his heater core, or the alternator, or a fan, etc. but on the plus side, he'll learn a lot, and make him appreciate any other new mustang.

shop around for a 96-01. Maybe even start him off with a v6. He can get a 99-01 v6 for like under $5k

My only concern would be, is that too much car for a new driver? Sounds like he is very mature but dim 5 o's run along pretty good.

My first car was a 97 saturn sc2. Had it for 6 years and still runs great. I gave it to my older brotherso he did not have to drive his truck to work every day and waste gas. With how i treated that car i am surprised it still runs. lol

My first car was a previously rolled 1997 Toyota *insert gasp here* 4-Runner that I picked up for $100. But I like the car you posted, I think it's definitely something worth looking more into for sure.

my first car was a white 78 chevy nova 4door. my dad paid 800$ for it, i got it in 1992 or something. it was ghetto, but i loved it and still miss it. i think u will always love ur first car no matter what it is. i am 33 years old and i have never bought a car over 3,500 dollars cause i never had the money to finance anything. my mustang cost me 2,400$ my kids first car will be a cheap ghetto car prob. and she will always remember it

Yeah, my 2000 performance red sixer. From when I was 16-18.

I bought that thing for $6500. I owned it for 2 yrs and put 12,000 miles on it and sold it for $7000.

I guess that wasn't much of a mistake.
