that nikon does look better, i dig its ability to focus on the object you want, and leaves the rest fuzzy... is that what SLR does?

^ If you take action shots beware, Nikon is known for taking longer to process pics between shots

I'm not camera genius so I can't really explain to you myself what DSLR does, but what it is is a digital version of 'single-lens-reflex' which was used in professional cameras before DSLR came around .

If you want to learn about what DSLR is you can check it out here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital..._reflex_camera

The focusing is all in the lens, most DSLR lenses have autofocus, some cheaper ones are manual focus only. The standard lens with the D40 is the 18-55mm autofocus, and it gets the job done but there is room for improvement.

As far as the image processing being slow or whatever in Nikons, it hasn't really made a difference to me. The D40 can capture 3 frames a second, and with some good timing that's all you need.

But trust me, it is worth it to spend $500 on a camera, especially if you enjoy photography. DSLR cameras are amazing.

The D40 comes with a rechargeable battery, and spares are like $10.00 each.

http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Digital-.../dp/B000KJQ1DG
$450 on amazon.

I have the Sony A200 DSLR. It's 10.2mp and you could find it for around $450-500. It's a good camera and I would say it rivals any other camera in the same pay scale.

Very nice. Congrats on a good buy. Now good luck learning all the ins and outs of these damn things. they are fun and get addictive, but a great investment I think.

Awesome man. I would have said get the canon rebel xt since I have one and love it, but the nikon d40 is an awesome camera as well.

btw here is a site to check out for some basic how-to tips for your new dslr. There are a million things you can do with your camera, normally I don't look at manuals but honestly check yours out if you learn how to use the camera to it's potential you can crank out some really cool pictures.

Photomatix, not Photomatrix.
Photoshop CS2/3 both have the ability, but not good. I use Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 for mine. I love it. It's only a $100 program, and you get a lot of the photoshop abilities for hundreds of dollars less.

I have 2 Canon SLRs and their great. To get the blurry background effect you need to get a portrait lens.
