I shoot with the Canon Digital Rebel XTi and love it. It's a just a tad over $600 though. The best way to buy a DSLR camera is to buy the body you want and then buy the lens separate. Usually the kit lens isn't all that great. I wish I would have done that in the beginning. A good DSLR camera and a good lens will be way over $600 though. Good luck.

I'm loving my Sony A200. For $500 it's a damn good deal. I was looking at the Nikon D40 or D60, but they were only like 6 megapixels or so. I know megapixels only matter when you start printing out bigger sizes, but I didn't want a DSLR that had less megapixels than most point and shoot cameras. They good thing about my camera is that I can get the telephoto lense for like $200. Any DSLR in the $500-600 range are all entry level cameras.

I've heard the D60's are nice camera's, but they are $200 more in price. If you look at Bestbuy.com, you can get a Canon - EOS Digital Rebel XT 8.0-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera - Silver for $494.

Mega-pixelage really isn't a worthwhile factor when deciding on cameras. even with DSLR cameras most of the people I know only use the 3MP setting to save space.

Hey Badfish, are you using any filters in those shots? Just wondering if you use the polarize filter?

Damn good choice man. Those things can take some nice pics. So, where's the proof? I wanna see some good pics. Maybe HDR's even.....

That's true, but I figure you might as well have it. I have mine set at 10.1 megapixels, Jpeg, and fine quality and I get around 500 pictures on a 2gb compact flash card. I don't think I'll ever take 500 pictures at one time.

I shoot with the rebel xt and love it. I definately would suggest it. Best bet though since the rebel xt and nikon d40 both take very good pics is to go to best buy or somewhere and get a feel for each and decide which one fits better in your hands and what not.

My wife is a trained photographer, has a graphic background, and has worked in the printing industry her whole life. She uses a 4 year old Pentax DSLR that is 6 MP and her photos end up in annual reports and in professional brochures - lol.
If you want the best camera, look no further then the Nikon D3. It is $5,000. Probably the best professional camera for the price. The Nikon D300 is also great and is about $1,700. Both are 12 MP. You pay for speed, ASA settings, and things like live view screens. Down from there, a great sub-professional camera is a Canon EOS 40D for around $1100 to $1200 or the Pentax K20D (same price).
For a entry DSLR, The Canon EOS is probably the best option at $750 or the Sony Alpha 350 ($700 -$800). They are 12 and 14 MP respectively. Me? I would buy the Pentax200D just due to my experience with Pentax cameras and this one is about $600. The Olympus Evolt E-420 is also a great option and less then $500 (10 MP).
Screw Best Buy for cameras....look at Ritz Camera online. That is who we always use. They have the Canon EOS with a lense right now for $850 and free shipping.
