Yeah, you aren't going to get a lot of us to laugh. It is old, and everyone does it. I have said way too much **** to laugh at people trying to make me sound gay. It is actually a really fucked up thing to do. Every time you tie up one of our operators to have Junior high school laughs over making someone say *****, that means one person can't help a deaf person who needs to make a call. IT may seem harmless to you, but I guarantee if you tried to call 911 and your cell phone said that too many people were on the phone and you couldnt make a call right now, and then you found out you couldnt make the call because some idiot was making a ridiculous prank call you would be pretty pissed. People who make prank calls over relay really need to get a ******* life.

Exactly what I have been wondering from the start of this thread. How do deaf people talk on the phone. I know they can talk, but if they can't hear, then it's kinda one sided. I just don't understand how it works.

the deaf guy has a device he plugs into the line that he can type on.

he calls the service, they do a 3 way call and bring on the people he wants to call. Whatever the deaf dude types the person at the service "relays" the message. Once the person on the other end responds, they type it back to the deaf dude.

they basically use a third party to be thier voice and ears and talk to the third part via text.

got it?

as in Jonny Deaf Dude calls up Billy at the relay service and types to billy what he wants to say, billy calls paul who johnny deaf guy wants to talk to and reads whatever jonny deaf guy writes, and billy also messages jonny dead dude whatever paul says.

well seeing that most of the time ppl do it they are hammered at ridiculous times in the morning (yes i get that there are diff time zones) I dont think it would be much of a problem. Also seeing that any time any1 I know that has ever done it has never had to wait to get an operator, im sure you have plenty of people who are in the business to handle all the calls that may come in at 3 in morning.

People at my work are on the computer, we have a program that Deaf people can use to connect to us. They type a number and send it to a username (Not telling anyone for the obvious reasons) and it comes through to us. And they have a conversations with us on AIM just like you would with a freind online. We take the number they gave us, and call it. We tell the person they called that we are calling on behalf of someone who is deaf. And they can now have a conversation, the deaf person types what they want to say, we read it, and then relay it to the hearing person, then the hearing person replies and what they say, we type to the deaf person, so they can know, and then respond.

yea... it seems pointless, as we could just bypass you guys and just use AIM. But I can understand if these are older people who are incompetent with the computer...

Yeah, plenty, This afternoon we had over 100 people staffed and on calls and we actually had deaf users in queue waiting for calls. And I guarantee there was atleast 2 deaf users tied up on ridiculous prank calls, so you can see why we get mad about it.

"Hello Dad I was wondering when you were going to pick me up"
"Well your sister had to go to the hospital so I took her and Ill be on my way soon"
'Whats wrong with her?"
"Nothing, she just had some stomach pains"
"Oh but she is okay?"
"yeah she will be fine, Im on my way now"
"Okay thanks Dad, stop and get some food before you do"
"Okay Ill get the usual"

That conversation through relay would take maybe 2 minutes, over text it would take probably close to 10. Why should deaf people text and take that much longer? Not to mention deaf people also need to call banks, cell phone providers, cable providers, etc just like everyone else.

People who have these accounts need to wake up. Know why? Because of stupid **** like this. Did you know that many employers are screening canidates for their My Space accounts to find out information about them and find out what kind of person they are? So are colleges. It is completely legal because it is public information.

The Bottom Line is.. Do not use your supervisory position to downgrade anyone who works for you. They are not peons unless you are among them. You should probably look closely at your company's rule book. There should be a section on Ethics which will tell you to treat your subordinates with the respect they deserve.. If I were you in your position, I would not push the issue of knowing her from a website.

If you want to tell her you know her from such, could be a major snafu in your position at your company. I would steer clear of any personal conversation with her. Keep it professional, and document any interaction with her. Ethics training is a useful tool. You should try it, being a supervisor can be a catch 22 situation..
