As funny as that is, I've had mechanics try a pull similar **** on me all the time
It really pisses them off when I can tell them they're full of ****, that it doesn't take half a day to pull a tranny out of an 83 chevy pickup.
Having a mechanic for a Dad has really paid off.

Heh. It's sad but true. A lot of people are extremely ignorant about how their car works. I think schools should start making basic auto a mandatory class or something. It sure is a hell of a lot more useful then some of the other **** I learned about.

Lol. Mechanics for the most part are pretty honest, but there are definatly a few out there who take advantage of the ignorant.
Honestly i feel that anytime you are making a purchase or spending money on a product or service that you are relativly ignorant about it is best to learn as much as you can.
Im no mechanic, but i know how cars work for the most part and i have a good enough understanding that a mechanic would have a hard time pulling one over on me. Ive rebuild a carb, swapped a clutch, cleaned an egr, did this did that, enough little stuff to understand what it is im seeing when im looking under the hood and im am aware of the purpose of each part. Anything less and you are really at the mercy of those who could potentially take advantage of you.
This applies in all areas as well. Especially home audio systems and electronics, those salesmen are crap, with the exception of the uber expencive high end dealers,. the people at best buy, circuit city, ultimate electronics are a bunch of idiots that dont know **** and just try to either sell you the most expencive thing they have, or they try to sell you that once piece of gear that they have already sold 5 of that week and if they sell 2 more by the end of the next day they get a bonus or a free digital camera.
lol
always educate yourself as much as possible for any large purchase or service that you are looking at.

I was realy lucky to have my Dad force me to rebuild carbs and engines and do brakes and stuff as a teen girl it was big bonus. And six years as a helicopter mechanic is a big help too, turning wrenches is turning wrenches.
I know a lot of women who can barely put gas in themselves and would take the word of any mechanic that said they needed something.

Jeeesis. Nobody on earth, man or woman could be that dense. Even my wife would have told that midas guy to NOT do anything that he recommended. Just do what I brought the car in for, please, or you will pay for it. That's obviously a radio comedy sketch, and I really think no one, not even my 80 year old gramma would fall for that. 2 transmissions?
LOL, Almost too stupid to be funny..
