Default Microsoft FTL! Circle of Death strikes again!

DAMMIT

Woke up this morning, wa splanning on feeding Logan, drinkin some coffee and maybe playing some video games.

Turned on the system

RED BLINKING CIRCLE OF DEATH.

NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Checked online, my warranty is expired. Looked online, couldnt find any place that sold a 360 setup for under 279... DAMMIT.

Called a buddy of mine who works at a gaming store, asked if they sold Xbox360 consoles without a bundle, well, turns out he had somebody bring in a 3-4 month old Xbox360 Elite.

He said if i packed my Xbox 360 console, controller, and cables up he would pretend it works and give me $70 in store credit, and he could sell me the used Elite bundle for 250, and he could give me his store discount.

Only bummer is they dont accept the hard drives, so i diddnt get the 120 gig, but i kept my 20 gig with all my saved games and mp3's and stuff, which i guess is fine cause i never maxed out my 20 gig HD.

So all said and done, i got a 360 Elite bundle set, Sims 2 on PS2 for the wife and a Battery Charger for the controller all for $219.00

Not bad, still sucks my xbox died.

So what does the Elite do other than 1080P? My plasma is only 1080i anyways.

does it play HDDVD by any chance? or do anything else other than be black with an HDMI output?

So in the end, i got a 360 Elite

No, you'd still need the $200 360 HDDVD player. lol

I've had my 360 for a year and have no problems, but it's one of the newer versions..though I want to upgrade to an elite or something with HDMI.

Because the 360 is built with rubber bands and duct tape.

Apparently any of the newer ones diddnt have this issue. Mine ran me for over a year without incident.

I guess some of the circuitry they were using when they first released these things wasnt really the best, i assume they went the cheapest route, and there is a common catastrophic system failure that can happen without warning at any time. Could be in the middle of a game, could be when working on settings, could be when it iss shut off. There is nothing that apparently provokes it. It just sometimes without any real reason ******* dies and becomes a big paperweight.

My friend that sold me the Elite said he has never seen an Elite brought in because of this, then he went brambling on about the ckt board manufacturers and stuff.

So i guess since my TV does 1080I, the ONLY thing this thing does better than my old xbox is it doesent just keel over and die, and it matches my stereo equipment better cause it is black.

Jack MS extended their warranty for the 3 rings of death to all 360s. You could of repaired your 360 for free. Your friend at the game store is a dumb *** or a smart one and just jacked your 360 to repair himself and gave you his employee discount.

I already checked it online with the serial number, it stated the warranty has been expired and they will not accept it for any warranty work

trust me that is the first thing i checked

EDIT

dammit
Yah it says on microsoft here that the 3 ring of death warranty coverage i 3 years. I wonder why the hell it said my warrant was up?

360 hasnt been out 3 years so not sure yours is not covered. I would speak to someone about it but I guess its too late since yours has been traded in.

Microsoft to extend warranty against red rings of death to 3 years
By Ben Kuchera | Published: July 05, 2007 - 03:45PM CT

These days, it's harder to find someone with an original 360 than it is to find one who has had problems, it seems. Everyone online is complaining about overheating, red lights of death, and being on their third systems (if not more). I've had two die, and I know Frank has been through the same thing. Other game journalists and reviews have complained about having to replace the office system often. A story claiming that over 30 percent of systems were going bad was based on some shaky data, but to many this didn't seem outside the realm of possibility.

Microsoft has already extended their warranty, but that didn't keep people from complaining about the overwhelmingly bad reputation of the 360 hardware when it came to defective units. Now Microsoft is doing it again: this time the warranty will cover flashing red lights up to three years from the date of purchase.

"The majority of Xbox 360 owners are having a great experience with their console and have from day one. But, this problem has caused frustration for some of our customers and for that, we sincerely apologize," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division. "We value our community tremendously and look at this as an investment in our customer base. We look forward to great things to come." The announcement also states that Microsoft will take a $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion pre-tax charge to earnings for the quarter ended June 30, 2007 for anticipated costs under its current and enhanced Xbox 360 policies.

The announcement describes an "unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles," and goes on to say that they have "identified a number of factors which can cause general hardware failures indicated by three red flashing lights on the console." Microsoft also promises that this new warranty will take care of existing customers, and also that they have improved the hardware itself.

This is good news, and should alleviate some fears from consumers about their systems. It might even entice new customers to pick up a system. There are still some questions about what changes to the hardware will be made to counteract these problems, but the fact that Microsoft has admitted there is an issue and is finally doing something about it is a good thing. If you've already paid to have your system replaced, Microsoft will reimburse you.

So does this change your opinion of the hardware, or is it too little, too late?

the reason the 360s over heat is many factors
the main one being the ****** ATI motherboard they use in the 360 and WII's
i ****** HATE ATI with a passion
ive had 4 graphics cards from them
and dun dun dun
4 have overheated and fried the circuits
ive sat there and watched as the graphics card get hot start smokin and then just fry
WHY? because ATI makes ****
anyway
3 most common rings of death is either fried motherboard(most common cause)\
bad circuitry that came loose or fried
and or you left it on to long in extreme weather

Actually the HDDVD drives are now only $129.99. I'm not sure if the deal is still going on or not, but Amazon was selling them for $80. I would still be careful with your model because they didn't put the new chips in the systems until about November of last year.

well, from what im seeing all the Elites had the new hardware design that prevents them from being susceptible to the 'Red Ring of Death' hardware fault..

that is what some dude named Robbie Bach from Microsoft had apparently declared.

my buddy working at the game store said he has never seen a 360 come in for repair or warranty work that involved the circle of death...

i hope it isnt gonna be a problem at least.

i almost killed my 360 a few weeks ago...i bought a entertainment center last month and put the 360 in the cubby there was a lot of cubic space and was open in the back partially so i thought the fans would blow the hot air out. well that didnt happen and i heard a strange beeping after playing for about 2-3 hours so i checked the cubby and that **** was scorching hot. i could barely pick up the 360 it was seriously running super hot. im suprised it didnt die on me. i think my warranty is voided to since i had it chipped last year. the HD drives are so cheap because HD DVD is about to die out

lol... nothing like a last ditch attempt to saturate the market

the reason HDdvd is failing is that they diddnt include it in the package.

The PS3 had blue ray built in and also cost the same as a standalone blueray player.

untill then blueray looked like it was losing. If microsoft would have given it HDDVD ability out of the box blueray would probably be finished.

naw
the fan system thats built with the 360 is terrible
if it gets hot it doesnt even really help to cool it down
you actually have to spend the extra money to cool the system down noticeably for the intercooling kit or w/e
imo next gene of game consoles needs to have the closed fluid colling systems
what i built for my cousin
his never gets above 101 farenheit

after i pulled it out of the cubby it took about 10-15 minutes for it to cool down. i read on the xbox forums that those coolers that attach to the back of the systems are worse because its blowing air into the exhaust portion of the case or something like that.

liquid cooling for a commercial gaming consoles sounds far fetched and i see lots of warranty issues with that.

i dont play enough to even need the extra cooling. if im going to nerd out and play for 5-6 hours than i could see the need but i usually only have enough patience to play more than 2 hours maybe 3 max.

I have the intercooler fans on both and it helps but you can not stick the 360 inside a cubby hole with no where for the exhaust heat to go. You would need to do what I did with my wifes thats inside a cabinet. I install a 120mm fan that draws the air out. A few times my wife forgot to turn on the fan and it got real hot so I installed a blue LED that powers on when fan is running. Even if you dont have anything in front of your cabinet you must provide airflow for the 360 which is intake from the side and exhaust through the back.

lol..

The wall my stereo stuff is in backs to the wall, so when building the cubby and knocking a hole in the wall i built it with 4 shelves, each one has a thermal sensor so when the heat in the shelf exceeds 90 degrees it turns the fan on for that shelf and gently pulls the hot air out into the garage.

oh man where to start.

COD4 is terrible. waste of 60$ Weak Single-player campaign, No co-op, and the multiplayer is marginal at best.

HD-DVD and blu-ray didn't exist when xbox 360 came out. What killed HD-DVD was Warner, Universal, and paramount all jumping to blu-ray at the same time.

Those "intercooler" things are WORSE for your Xbox.

launch boards did suck ***, but Zephyr and Falcon motherboards run great. I can run my box for 6-8 hours straight and it barely gets warm.

ATI makes crap? whats next, corvettes are slow?

Even Ben heck doesn't mess with water-cooling a console.
