Default career advice

So i kinda mentioned this yesterday, but for the past 8 years I've been a legislative aide working on public policy. That basically means that I help create policy/laws for an elected official....you know, the brains behind the operation....you know, one of the people who does all the work, but doesn't get the credit.

Anyway, my boss of 6 years pulled me in his office today and said that he's noticed lately that my heart isn't into it and that he is concerned about me because I used to be really into, and it seems like I don't like going to meetings and working on some nights and weekends when required. He was straight up with me and said he does not want me to quit and in no way shape or form, but he needs me to have my heart fully in it or find something that my heart is into. He told me to do some soul searching and get back to him next week and whatever my decision is he supports me 100%

Here is the thing, I'm burned out and I know it, and I probably need a career change. The thing is that it's easier to say than do and the hard part is that I have NO idea what it is I want to do.

My question to some of you older guys that have maybe gone through this. How did you go about figuring out a career change and how did you overcome the fear of making a major change?

I'm in process of a career change. I went to college and got a degree in communications. I wanted to be in sales, and this degree goes hand in hand with that. All through school I felt that sales was gonna be my thing. fast forward five years and I'm in sales, the 1st year was ok, I made some money and got pretty good at it. But I wasn't happy, I realized I just didn't like it as much as I thought I did. So I went back to school and now I'm getting a degree in construction management. I've always liked building ****, now I'm going to make a career out of it. It was easy for me...no kids, not married and my parents let me move back home. The best thing I can tell you is that you are not alone in this. Many people run into the same issue. But really look at what you enjoy, be it film, building, computers, social issues. Depending on how much capital you have access to, you could open up some franchise or start a business of your own. I think you should leave the job, If your heart is not in it....its over...for now. The sky is the limit...I chose something I know that I like..so find out what you really like.

Hey man, you have half the battle won, you know that this isnt for you. Theres an old saying that says "Find a job you like and you'll never work another day in Life" When you take your job home its time to change.
We're never to old to change.
I have been a mechanic for 35 yrs. I have raised 3 kids and for the most part had fun doing it. Look at it like this, some sob alot smarter me designed but I fixed the damn thing when it broke. I now work doing Tech. Support for the 3rd largest forklift manufacturer in the world.Thats a great feeling!
Working on your car is the same thing, I fixed that!
There is a national shortage of mechanics, truck drivers, plumbers and other skilled workers. These may not be the glamor jobs that all young people are looking for and you have to pay your dues and not start at the top. Pick something you like and do the BEST job you can and the SELF WORTH will make it all worthwhile.

I loved my job then hated it now Im loving it. You have to have a positive aura around you so others will want to be around you that alone will open doors.
