I dont know if you guys keep up with politics but this issue directly effects us.
http://themustangnews.com/fomoco_07/st-1207cafe.htm
The above article talks about a bill called Cafe (escalating Corporate Average Fuel Economy) It will force starting 2011 that all car makers raise their average fuel economy by 40% up from the 27.5 that it is now and by 2020 the average mpg must be 35mpg! The bill was signed 12/19/07 It looks as if the past is going to repeat itself. Have a read. Any thoughts?

i love my 13 mpg car! haha. This just means all of our cars will go up in value b/c they will became rare. They should just go back to a four cylinder mustang and make it so it gets 35mpg. Nothing says we cant swap a v8 into it after it leaves the dealership. I will keep my v8 forever, but maybe pick up a STI or something like that down the road as well...

nooo i would die if this happened. im still in high school and im lucky and happy to have my sixer. but i would totally rather have a GT. and was planning to get one when i graduated from college. but i gotta go for six years....
and yeah if this did happen old gt's would be rare. and to buy a v8 and get it installed would cost an arm and a leg

well
Well the bill has already been passed and its a average mpg for all the cars in a givin company just one 500hp gt500 with 15mpg will bring down their average by a lot and dont forget ford doesnt have a single car with 35 mpg they are going to have to invest a lot of their revenue to meet these new requirments i personally think the day of "new" muscle cars is over at least they will be few and far between to many people scared of global warming so buy the perfect mustang you want in the next few years instant classics!

Well, I guess that would depend upon what their definition of "Brand" is... The ford "family" includes Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda, Jaguar and Land Rover..
As far as ford not having any 35mpg vehicles..
Focus = 35Mpg
Escape Hybrid = 34Mpg
Obviously that's not much to work with, but with alternative fuels and innovation, 35Mpg Average within 12 years shouldn't be much of an issue..

I fully support laws to increase mpg. Getting to 35 mpg by 2020 is sad if you ask me. It should be more like 50 mpg.
Did you know that VW has a car in Europe that gets 65 mpg? And you can buy it right dam now if you are over there.
I think these laws are healthy in a lot of ways, because it forces a fleet average. It also means that they have to build affordable, high-milage vehicles, because otherwise they won't sell.
Keep in mind that gas prices could be twice what they are now by 2020. Look at what has happened in the last 12 years. Gas was $1.40 a gallon (in today's dollars)....now it is $3.00. Don't think $6.00 can't happen.
If we start bombing Iran, we will all be taking the bus to work. In 1981 when the Iran/Iraq Wa started, gas prices jumped $1.00. If we were to bomb Iran today, I would expect prices to jump in the $5.00 range over night.
This is EXACTLY why we need to improve fuel efficiency. Not because of price, but so we can stop relying on foreign oil. Guys, this is an accident waiting to happen and it is going to happen.

Don't get too excited. I live in the land of E-85! It is everywhere here, but the quality is too variable to be reliably used the way you would want it. The ethonal concentration can range from 70 to 85% and so the octane changes from 105 to about 120. The changes are pretty much seasonal as there are different blends. Perhaps in Ca this would not be too much of an issue, but can you imagine having a 120 octane tune, but then pump 105 into the car?
#22
Exactly! Already been happening. There is a tuner in the area that is doing pretty well with E-85 tunes. I may actually do it in the summer. The trick is to tune the car for worst blend, but then you leave power on the table. Follow me?

I don't have a problem with the law....I'm sure they will continue to produce the V-8, but add a nice gas guzzler tax to it or something, which they already do. (at least in Cali). Or what if they produced V-8's that would allow the owner to shut off 4 of the cylinders on the freeway and achieve the goals? I think Chevy might be doing that already with some of their trucks
