Get this....
The boys who run Alexander Ford in Franklin, TN on 96 hwy have to be on some serious drugs.
They have a Black 07 (not 08) Shelby GT500 Convertible. list price was $48,xxx, with options it was like $51 or $52,000...then to the left they had a sticker that said
Dealer Asking Price
Retail Markup
$25,000.00!!!!!
then there was some other BS chargess...total came out to be like $78,xxx.
I bout crapped! what a rip off!
then they had a White Shelby GT (not the GT500). regular price was $36,000...then because of the Shelby GT packgage...they were asking $48,000 for a car that has 25 hp more than a Stock 07/08 GT. I figured it at least came with a supercharger or something! but $48,000 for a car with no power adders really?
what a joke! the salesman was like oh yeah, it'll get up and scoot, and handles really well, yadda yadda, and we'll get you approved today, and you can drive it home.
so i turn to him and jokingly said...alright, give me $17K for my car, and sell me that Shelby for $32K and you got yourself a deal. he told me to get lost...and I was like, no I think you and Ford are the ones that are lost.
he says what do you mean? so I explained to him that his beloved dealership and automaker are so ridiculously overpricing their vehicles that the average person can't afford it anymore, and those that can afford them are either rich and don't have to worry about it, or stretch themselves so thin financially on credit just to have one, they end up getting them repo'd or can't affiord to do anything with them.
I said for the list price on that Shelby GT, I can take my car which I paid for @ $13,700 with 60K miles, dump another $23,000 into the motor, suspension, supercharger, cosmetics, stereo system, and all the stuff I've done and am planning to do, and my car will perform, drive, sound, and ride better than anything you got here on your dealership floor.
he just stared at me dumbfounded as I walked out the door. i wish i was a fly on the wall over there right now...i'd love to hear what's being said about that conversation.
btw....i was the only "customer" (if that's what you can call me) in the place! i can see why now.

Unfortunately Ford lost another customer which is me. I was going to buy a Shelby but not a marked up one so Id rather spend money on the industry that actually cares which is aftermarket. I will never buy another Ford product.

I'd buy a terminator, or a 93 Fox GT Hatchback from an individual...but that's it as far as I'm concerned.
Ford is slowly pissing away their customers, their product, and their business.

I had a thread about this a little while ago. I was at the Ford dealership and they had a red with white stripes GT500. MSRP was like $45,000 and then the markup was another $45,000. Dealerships suck *****.

haha, even in the ghetto they jack the prices up.

ford isn't doing anything wrong. The dealers KNOW that there are people stupid enough to spend 90K on a mustang (laf) and they price it so that they get that one asshat to spend his 90K instead of getting guys like me to walk in and buy 2 GT500's at 40K each because we can. They want the 25K of pure dealership only profit and they do not want to share margin with Ford. If they sell two of them for MSRP then they make maybe 10grand off each. If they sell 1 for 90K they make 60K on it. Simple business mixed with P.T. Barnum philosophy.

so their thinking is bass ackwards just as it has been for the last 20 years.

yeah but thats pretty much every company. Why would a company want to sell something for 45K when they know they can sell it for 90K. Most companies are out to make the most money they can.

but let's say 2 dealerships in completely different states (say Wyoming and Indiana for this here) have 10 Shelby GT500's each.
Wyoming - Dealer A - MSRP is $43,000. He sets his prices at $51,000.
Indiana - Dealer B - MSRP is $43,000. He sets his prices at $78,000.
now who do you think is honestly gonna sell more Shelby's? Dealer A or Dealer B? and who do you think will make more profit.
Now this actually a real life scenario here in Nashville.
Two Rivers Ford in Nashville sells them for between $46K - $50K, while Alexander Ford in Franklin tries to sell theirs for $78K.
I found out from a guy who knows someone at Alexander, that black shelby has been sitting there for 3 1/2 months.
another guy in our Nashville club, works at Two Rivers, and they've been going through them like hot cakes.
If people know they can get it cheaper somewhere else, they're not gonna be so stupid as to buy a car for $78K when they can get it for $50K. that's just called bargain shopping.
unless of course your just filthy rich, don't care about the money, and you buy the first thing you see.

You miss the basic point that they're not interested in selling a lot of GT500's... they want to sell a few thousand and that's it. That's how tards find value in the 90K price potential.

I have mixed feeling about this. First of all, the dealers are all getting destroyed right now big time and there are deal to be found everywhere. Then, along comes an opportunit to make big bucks and they are trying to capitalize. If you don't like it, too bad, don't buy it. The dealers can make enough money on these things to cover about 25 cars....think of it that way.
Don't be pissed, they owe you nothing. The prices will drop eventually, a few years ago there were similar mark-up on the 2005 GT's.
Only the rich can buy these cars now because the banks won't finance $25k over list. And this is what bugs be a bit (now the other side). ****, Back in the day, HS girls were buying GT500's as they were not expensive. They were a poor-mans sports car and this is what made the Mustang have it's fame. Now, they are just priced out of the world of 99% of people.
If Ford is not careful, they will make the same misstakes Chevy did with the Camaro....they aliented the die-hards when they drove the prices through the roof.
