Exclamation Anybody a car salesman or was one?

So I heard about a job opening for a spanish speaking sales rep for David Mcdavid Acura of Plano and I decided to send them my resume just for kicks. No later than a day I get an e-mail telling me about setting up an interview. I thought awwww i'm sure I'm not the only one getting this e-mail so I decided to put it off my mind and not bother with it. I'm eating lunch and I get a call asking me to come in for an interview. I said cool, I'll be there. Can't lose out on nothing. I show up meet with the head guy, fill out an application and next thing you know I take a drug test for them earlier today. So at my current job I don't make crap caue i'm a part time. I go to school til noon, get to work @ 1 and get off @ 7 pm. Therefore I don't put alot of hrs in. I make roughly about 1400 a month, which give me enough to pay the stang, pay my credit cards and pay a few bills here and there and i'm stuck with maybe $200 a mo. for myself after it's all said and done. So of course after I pass the drug test they will tell me about how much $$ I'll be making but I wanted to hear from anyone who has experience in this field.

What's it like? Would you recommend this job to someone else?

I was a sales rep for VZW before so I'm very familiar with the duties of a sales rep.

Thanks for any help guys..

A friend of mine was a sales rep for the largest Dodge dealership in florida. He seemed to like it, but only for a few years. Kind of like a temporary full time job until he got into what he really wanted to do (air force mechanic on jets and helicopters). He said it was somewhat stressful because you would get fired pretty easily if you didn't sell a certain number of cars a week. It was a very large dealership however and sold like 200 cars a month or something outrageous.

There were a lot of perks though, he mentioned to me that the manager would pick out a car at the beginning of every day in front of everyone, and whoever sold that car would get $100 cash bonus that day.

I can tell you in a month how it is. I start as a car salesman on the 27th. The guy that hired me told me that at the dealership I am going to be working at (not a huge dealership) it's not hard to make $70-80k a year, but it was all up to me on if I wanted to make that much, meaning how hard I wanted to work....

Yeah, and you said you stayed there for 3 days? I don't expect to sell a car a day especially my first day. Hell, not even my first week. You don't just jump into anything and expect to be instantly great at it. My first year, no I won't make 70-80, but in a couple of years, yes I will. And, like I already said in my thread, I get salary plus comission, and will only work 46 hours a week, only 5 days a week (Mon-Sat, with a day off in there somewhere). And I will work staggered hours, 9-5 or 12-8. I will only have to work open to close 3-4 tiems a year when they have their big sales. You should have never taken the job to begin with based on just comission and no salary, that is crazy.

A friend of a friend is working at a local dealership. He works 9-5 Mon-Fri. Gets paid $1200 dollars a week as a base pay. If his commision is more than $1200 for the week than he just gets his commision, if it's not, then he gets $1200 for his salary.

Granted, if they have to pay you salary and not commision, you probably won't be there long.

depends on how the car buisness is doing. i can tell you, when its bad, you take home nothing and waste 50 hours a week sitting on your ***. you wont make 80k a year. you may make 40 if you are lucky... salemen at car dealerships are a dime a dozen. i see new guys once a month at ours. stay away from it...

hmmm..well, I'm not trying to make a career out of it. I'm going to law school after I finish my bachelors next year. Hell I only make about 19k a year at my current job. Anything more than that would be sweet. ....
Plus it might help that i'll there will only be 2 spanish speaking sales reps there. We will be the only ones handling spanish speakers...

I don't know wether I should take this job or not...

I'm actually a car salesman for Acura. Acura is a great product except that people are always SHOPPING Lexus, Infinity ect...When you get into a high end product it sells itself. hell our TL has been #1 in it's class for 3 years in a row. And the cheapest. And our number 1 seller. I'm on the retail floor as opposed to internet...and it's not as hustle and bustle as the floor than the ID...

I'm going on my second year in sales, and i'll retire in the car biz. There's money to be made....you just gotta make it. Be prepared to not work your schedule...i work about 65-70 a week, and i'm scheudled for 46. Then if you prove yourself on the floor and do good you can ask to be placed in a management positioin when it opens up. Management makes BANK!!!!!!! My GSM (the guy who gives us the numbers) pulls in a cool 13-14k a month sitting behind a desk working deals. I also had a finance manager making 20k on a reg basis. You just gotta want it. I personally don't know any other 20 year olds like myself making 60-65k (legally) and in the next year or two making easilly twice that. just my 2 cents being a salesman for the same product. Just put it like this...this weekend i sold two cars (friday and sat) and made over $1700 for my pocket. Less taxes of course.
But i will say...it's not for everybody. At least try it out. What can it hurt?!?!?!
