Default 99 & 01 Cobra

What do you guys think about the 99 & 01 Cobra? Good to mod or a waste of time? Or anything about them in general....looking to get one but i'm not sure if their worth the difference in $ from a GT of the same year or newer.....thanks for any input

I heard the 99 cobras sucked but a friend of mine has an 01 that he's done cams, intake, exhaust, longtubes, 3.73's, and a few other thigns to. he claims to have done a 11.9 in the 1/4 mile so I guess theyre pretty good.

The 01 is definately the stronger of the two. Even with there identical factory ratings the 01 is leaps and bounds above the 99 in terms of accelration. If you can swing a good enough deal then a 99 isnt all that bad a gear swap will really wake it up.

I think the 99 where lacking in HP as many owners were complaining that the claims where not back with what the Cobra actually had so Ford had to fix this problem which caused a MIA in 00 only the Cobra R came out that year. So if you are getting a 99 Call the SVT with vin # and see if it was upgraded.

01 cobra hands down. The 01's also have the nice seats, with the suede insert and the cobra in the seats. They also come with the 6 disc in dash CD player.

A friend and I took out our old boss's 99 cobra and I have to say I was not impressed with it. The only thing I liked about it was the independent rear, it did ride better than my gt. As power goes, it ran good but just wasn't what I thought it would be.

Hell i remember i ran one when my car was bonestock down to the paper filter. I was a white 99 coupe and we went from a 2nd gear roll and my front bumper was at his door all the way to 4th gear. I don't know if it was before or after the "fix".. ...

If memory serves me correctly, I believe the intake manifold was starving the rear two cylinders for fuel on the 99s. I remember the test that Motor Trend did between the 99 Cobra, Camaro SS, and Trans Am. The Cobra only ran like 6.0 to 60 and the editors said you really had to wind it out to get the power out of it. A friend of a friend had one and he took it to the dealer, and they replaced the exhaust system, intake, and remapped the computer. I don't remember what the result was being that was 6 years ago and I ditched that friend.
The whole fiasco led to ford not producing a 00' model other than the R. The 01 model would deff. be my choice of the two.

The Post Fix 99 (corrected intake manifold and retune) is the exact same as an 01 Cobra. The only main difference is the Transmission.

Either model would be great, the 99's have the weakest independent rear...the 01 transmission is the TR-3650 which is the weakest transmission.

I'd say whichever you could get a better deal on (the 99 being the case if it's a post-Fix.)

Different colors were offered in 01 which might appeal to you more.

Also 99+ Cobra's respond much better to N/A mods then the 96-98. The intake port configuration is much more suited to N/A on the 99+ C heads, and the torque down low is significantly higher.
