Default FRONT END THUNKING

Its been a while! But I'm glad to be be back on the Forum!
My 2004 GT has recently given me the first problem I've had since I bought it used in October 2007. It now has just over 55k and is my DD.
In the last month I have been noticing a "thunking" noise from my front end especially when braking and then when I let off the brakes at a stop. I can now here it when I hit a dip in the pavement.
Took my car to a tire and brake place and the problem was diagnosed as being bad bushings on the front lower control arm.
I was told that the bushings cannot be replaced and that the entire assembly must be changed and that would be big bucks. The mechanic told me that this is a uniquely a Ford problem.
Am I hearing the truth?

MagnaFlow Cat back

No, they can be replaced. Both Energy Suspension and Prothane make replacements. You just have to press the old bushings out of the sleeves, and then press in the new ones.
