Default HELP...serious shifting problem

I just bought a 2000 Mustang a couple of days ago. It was said to have no problems but I'm having a terrible time with the shifting mechanism. Sometimes at a stop light the car will get stuck in neutral....I won't be able to shift into any of the gears with the clutch all the way down. Also, when I use reverse the stick gets stuck in the gear and I have to shut the car off to get it out of it. The final problem that makes no sense to me is that when it is stuck out of gear and in neutral with the clutch all the way down, the car moves foward if u push trying to get into 1st or 2nd gear. Someone please help me!

Thats what you get when you buy a 5 speed. People have so many problems with those trannys. You probably need to rebuild it.

Damn that sucks man! and don't listen to the post above! Autos aren't the best thing in the world! ...yeah, you probably need a rebuild, but i would have it checked out to see what the problem is! Hell I have 78k on my 02 5-speed and i've never had a problem with it! Stock clutch and everything!

You dont have a T56 unless you replace your stock 5speed with a 6speed.

He wouldnt have a TKO, TKO's are aftermarket.

He has a T-45, and welcome to the world of the ****tiest tranny ever. I have to replace mine because 3 synchros are going bad. Probably gonna get the TKO 500 with a 26 Spline clutch .

sno117,

It sounds like you just got the short end of the stick...someone has dogged the hell out of that transmission. There are stories all the time of people's tranny getting stuck in gear or unable to shift into any gear etc. It could be a variety of problems, but just get the transmission inspected by a professional (unless you've done tranny work yourself.) They will be able to diagnose the problem.

From there you can either decide to rebuild or upgrade. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I hear a lot about the ford tranny problems. Mine acts funny when it's cold. I've heard there is a kit to fix it but I haven't looked into it. Whatever happened to good old fashioned Muncie 4 spds, I had a rock crusher with a big ole sloppy hurst shifter for 12 years in my 79 Z-28. went through a few clutches but that tranny never gave me any trouble, Except all the whinning it did. But I used to love that sound. Sounded like that 55 chevy from "2 lane blacktop" WEEE. which BTW was the same 55 chevy that harrison ford drove in american graffitti.

If I have the extended warranty will the transmission work be covered? The warranty is good for another couple of months.

go to the dealership and find out. that would probably be your best answer, and if it is covered set up an appointment. then my friend call it a day and try to drink a 30 pack in a day. thats what i would do.

First thing is your clutch is shot thats why your engaging gears when clutch is to the floor. that could be the whole problem. then again it could be that your trannie is shot along with the clutch. but i would go with the new clutch first, your gonna need one weather you relace the trainnie or not.
