Default What is the Best Way to Reset ECU?

I need to reset my ECU. People are saying to take the negative (-) off the battery. And people are saying to pull out a fuse or two. I've heard that one of these ways will make you lose power. Which is the best?

I've never heard of removing fuses to reset the ECU. I've always done it by disconnecting the battery cable.

Just disconnect the battery cable and turn the headlights on.

That does not look like a good idea. Just disconnect the battery.

Does it really matter what the car is? I assumed not, because either way youre still resetting the same thing.

It does and it doesn't. If you're on a reputable forum that isn't full of idiots and actually has good usable information and isn't frequented by ricers, it won't matter.

Edit: And you did the right thing by coming on here and asking instead of just taking their word for it. If you believe everything you read on those Honda forums, I feel sorry for you.

Just take off the battery cable and do it that way. I have done that to a few cars and it works.

I took this directly from my 2000 Owner's Manual...

Because your vehicle’s engine is electronically controlled by a computer, some control conditions are maintained by power from the battery. When the
battery is disconnected or a new battery is installed, the engine must relearn its idle and fuel trim strategy for optimum driveability and performance.

To begin this process:

1. With the vehicle at a complete stop, set the parking brake.
2. Put the gearshift in P (Park) (automatic transmission) or the neutral position (manual transmission), turn off all accessories and start the engine.
3. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.
4. Allow the engine to idle for at least one minute.
5. Turn the A/C on and allow the engine to idle for at least one minute.
6. Drive the vehicle to complete the relearning process.
  • The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the idle and fuel trim strategy.
  • If you do not allow the engine to relearn its idle trim, the idle quality of your vehicle may be adversely affected until the idle trim is eventually relearned.
If the battery has been disconnected or a new battery has been installed, the clock and the preset radio stations must be reset once the battery is reconnected.

I never even thought to check the manual...damn. Well, I reset it already by my own instructions, and It's running a lot better. But, now I think I should reset it by how my owners manual says...

You don't need to reset it again. It will relearn how to idle and what fuel trims it needs. Just drive the car now.

Sure, you don't have to reset it like the manual says but it could very well possibly run like **** for a few miles. Mine did.
