There is the t3650, t3550, t56 (6spd in cobra) t5 / t45, tko (tremec). The t56 is the strongest transmition and comes in vehicles like the viper and cadillac cts-V, but they are a tad modified between each vehicle for fitment.

I don't know the exact time but I think half way through 2001 or for sure in 02 they switch from the t-45/t5 to the 3650, which is a better tranny. The only major difference is that the 3650 has a final drive of .62, and the t45 had a .67 final drive.

yes, ford changed to the TR3650 in mid 01! The 3650 is a little stronger than the t-45!

99-01(mid) T-45 325ft lbs tourqe capable

(late) 01-05 TR3650 360ft lbs tourqe capable

3650 is much stronger and shifts smoother.

the strongest wouldnt be any of thsoe choices the strongest would be a TKO 600. Go to the tremec website you can read all about it.

I linked to the Tremec site and saw that there are sev eral 3650's and that one of them can handle 390 ft/lbs. Anyone know the diff?

some models come with different shaft sizes (internal shafts that the gears ride on) and gear and synchro combinations. Each different combination is rated to a specific power level. In all seriousness, I've seen way way way too many 01-04 GT's that come with 3650s reliably make 450+hp/tq on the stock tranny and it provides them with years of service... as long as you're judicious about how and when you flog them it'll last. Get stupid and buy another just like everything else. Your vehicle weight, overall gearing, power band and typical use will determine which is the best for you in any particular model # of Tremec.

The TKO series are seriously strong right out of the box and can hold pretty much anything you're likely to throw at them. I'm planning a TKO600 in the next year or so but that's based on finances. If I make good money off some upcoming business ventures it may come sooner. TKO's are a little less refined feeling than T5/T45 and TR3650's but sometimes you have to sacrifice silky shifts for reliability.

Don't discount the T45 that you have. They can be made very strong with a little upgrading of internals. I was just reading in an old MM&FF about a company that does build up work on t45's and they seem to think it'll hold more than double the stock rating. I'll link the site if that's something you might be interested in. The upgrade can cost as much as a new tranny but usually less, it'll always be stronger than anything in the same price class unless you score a killer deal on a used t56.

T56 is a great tranny for open road racers and people that need 6 close ratio gears but it's really less than ideal on a street car. 5 speeds is plenty even with 5th gear being wildly overdriven to .62-.68:1. I like .82-.85 5th gears since the high gear throttle response is so much better but it does cost a fair amount of highway mileage so pick what you need based on how you need it to perform daily.
