Dumps are a center exhaust dump setup, hence the name "dumps". No muffler, no exhaust tips, just the pipes ending just after the center of the vehicle, usually angled downward.

Rear exits usually have all of the fun legal stuff...cats, mufflers, etc... (also including mid-pipe, catback and tip/s)

not really a noob question. yeah, its what king said, exhaust that just stopes and goes under the car, has no midpipe, cats, mufflers, etc. its usually done in a race application, but some ppl really get obssesed with making their car as loud as possible. however they can't pass inspection most of the time.

on a similar note... are their dump valves? i think i have a friend with a mustang that had dump valves right before the cats and would open up at high pressure.

There is such a thing. But it doesn't work quite like that. Most cutouts are either cable operated (you want to run open exhaust, yank a cable in the center console. Or something to that effect.) or electrically operated (hit a button and they open). You get the best of both worlds, you can keep it quiet when you have to and pass an inspection, and you can have race mode at your fingertips.

NO, dumps do have mufflers and have nothing to do with cats etc. Dumps are when you have the exhaust exit right after the muffler and dump right down to the ground. On the mustang this means that right after the mid pipe you would have the muffler then it would dump down (this is right around the rear seat area.

I would recommend having them angled out a bit as this will help get of the exhaust out from under the car. I also have my own homemade Mac Produmps and they are very great. They make it louder and flow better, but you do get some exhaust fumes and its not for everyone.

The other thing they are talking about are called "cutouts" which like he said above let you either pull a cable, push a button or the cheaper ones you have to get out and take off 3 wing nuts and it will open a cap that lets the exhaust come right out. The Ls1 guys love cut outs as they have Y-pipes and this lets them get really good flow for cheap.

so if i was to do dumps, i would have to cut the cats out? theres no way i could just cut the y pipe after the cats and weld on the muffler from there?

no like spike said dumps have nothing to do with midpipes, cats, headers, etc. It goes from the headers though the cats, through what ever mufflers you have and then instead of having pipes leading to the tailpipes they just turn downward right after the muffler.

It will sound the same as a car with a full catback, just louder and deeper in and around the car.

alright cool...i think i may go this route then, especially if the sound will be about the same, since its gonna be half the price of a full catback

EDIT: lol.....would it be stupid to do the dumps and then just hang the tips on the end of the bumper, even tho they're not connected to anything, just to give it the look?

ok well one more thing...with the catback it was gonna be cheaper to buy the components seperately and put it together rather than buy the whole kit...with the dumps it looks like it'll be cheaper to buy the kit. so with that in mind, which one of these would yall think i should go with...i guess basically which tubing size?

http://www.macperformance.com/store/search.cfm?SID=3&

keep in mind this is for a 6 not a v8

edit...the link is messed up...it takes you to the search, just type in dumps and it'll take you to the page i thought it would

If you did want to go full with the tips you don't have to get a GT bumper. Just letting you know, if that was what was swaying you to go with dumps at all.

nah that wasnt really the issue, but i figured if i was gonna go cat back i should go all the way and swap the bumper

but if i go dumps and then later on decide to go with the rear exit, i can just use the mufflers that would already be on there and run tubing back to the bumper right?

I hear ya, i contemplated going with the GT rear for the longest time. Glad i didn't because I might end up dumping my soon as well.

As for running tips on the dumps later down the road, I'm not a 100% sure about that. If there was enough straight tubing on the turn down piece I don't see why you couldn't just clamp or weld on some extension and tips. Not totally sure though...

Only reason I'm considering it is because my tips are too small in my opinion and are starting to rust in certain areas. So I might just cut the tips off and dump it lol.

You can buy Mac pro dumps, but I think the smallest you can get them is 2.5" which is a bit much for a mild n/a v6. Just hook them up to a true dual setup. You can always just get whatever mufflers you like ( I hope they are not flowmasters) and then just weld a turn down onto the exit of the muffler and that is a dump. I would like I said before slightly angle them outward.

i've been thinking mac's...so 2.5" is even gonna be too big for a 6? and what is n/a? does that mean like stock or something?

so how come they have to turn down and outwards as they exit, just to the fumes are flushed out better?

at the moment i have nothing lol. i'll probably get a cai for Christmas, and thats it as of now lol. i have thought about gears but i'd rather go for the exhaust right now, and im not expecting power from it im just looking for the sound really. gears may be down the road, i dono. im a college sophomore and money isnt exactly a non issue lol

2.5" is a bit unneeded. I like to angle them out to help with the fumes. And n/a stands for naturally aspirated.

ah right...lol i have no idea what that means either

so 2.25 is gonna sound just as good as 2.5 then?

nice double negative, mr. college sophmore. lol.

seriously, i wouldn't even waste my time with exhaust, let alone CAI. do more research if you really want exhaust. here: http://www.mustangexhaust.com/index....d=49&Itemid=88

but IMO, do gears. 4.10s and never look back. u will be driving really happy with them.
