Default Side Exhuast In Michigan

Ok, bought my car with the exhaust routed off to the side. it broke off a metal bar that was holding it to the chassis and is now very close to falling off all together. So, i went into a shop for a quote on dual side exhuast and the guy says it is actually illeagal to have the tips infront of the axle/tire. But after reading a few threads from random sites i can't seem to find a sure answer and proof one way or another. Is it really illeagal or no?

If I remember right the law is the exhaust must be past the passenger compartment unless the car came stock that way. Don't think I've ever seen anyone actually get a ticket for it though. Just take it to another shop the guy probably just didn't feel like doing the work.

i live in michigan and have lots of friends whose truck exaust exits before the tires. It should not be an issue.

^^ that's because on a truck the wheels are under the bed not the passenger compartment

which is correct. On his mustang having it before the rear tires is not past the back seats. On a truck the rear tires are far beyond the cab but on a car its a different story. Not saying he can't do it but its true that it isn't allowed unless it came stock ex: Roush

My buddy has it on his car and he has never had a problem but his is a 2 seater so it might be ok and that might be why he never gets bothered

overall I wouldn't worry about it since some mustang's have them most cops don't know the difference if its a roush or not. If anything its just another thing they can tack on to a ticket if your already pulled over. Odds of getting pulled over for only somthing like that is slim to none most likely

my exhaust dumps right before my axle, its not out the side but i've never been pulled over for not having a tailpipe or the pipe ending under the passenger compartment.

Virginia law is the that way too. Call the State Police to make sure, like Dave said some OEM exhaust is side discharge and thats legal. Good Luck
