anybody had to put a hitch on thier mustang, i need to put one on my '01 GT.

 

i dont think any one hear is pulling any thing with there stangs. but why are you putting a trailer hitch on yours?

if you have a truck use, look at it this way you get 8mpg gas is say 3.51 (thats what it is ware i live) the hitch is going to cost you over $150 i bet. for 150 bucks you could buy a lot of gas.

First off, your sports car was not built to tow. The entire suspension is built on performance of the car alone, not the car plus whatever. You would be putting un-needed strain on your shocks, and lord knows how your brakes will do. There is a chance of scraping the rear end on the ground, the metal piece in the bumper giving way, etc...

Towing with your Mustang is NOT A GOOD IDEA.

 

first off, mustang is not a sports car....a corvette is a sportscar. mustang is GT car, in america they call them pony cars. named after car that created the class, the original mustang.

a tow hitch is not bolted to the bumper, its bolted to the frame. the weight is supported in the tires of the trailer, not the tongue of the trailer.....brakes, pulling a trailer would be no different then having 4 full grown adults in the car.

if you guys don't know thats cool.....but don't make comments if you don't know. its obvious you guys know little about towing

Anyway, if you don't want my opinion, don't ask for it. I know it's bolted to the frame, if you know mustangs, then you know the rear bumper bar behind the cover, is a part of the frame, and what I was talking about.

as to trailers...take a tounge hitch trailer & see if it sits level without being propped up. right, it does't. that proves that the weight is transferred to the front of the tongue & in turn to the car. oh...mustangs do still have a rear bumper & a front bumper. they just have plastic covering them so you can't see them. can you imagine a '65 front bumper on the new 2010? wow! sexy!
does anyone have a mustang that you can put 4 grown adults in? didn't think so.
i have been hauling stuff on & in trailers for about 40 years now. from bumper hitch, to gooseneck, to 5th wheel. believe me...a bumper type is not an option for a car like the mustang. it's too much a "gt" car. hey, remember twhen the first gt nomenclature came out? it stood for 'grand touring'. so if the mustang is not a sprots car, it must be a luxury sedan???

V6 Mustang is not a sports car, GT is barely a sports car, but Machs and Cobra's ARE sports cars.

Anyway, I too want a trailer hitch for when I get race tires. I need a way to carry my jack, tools, tires, and other equipment to the track. I haven't looked for one yet so I can't help you out if you find any information out post it up.

I don't really think hauling a bike is so bad, a few hundred pounds if positioned right won't hurt the car. You can't drive it like you would without the trailer ofcourse, but it won't ruin the car, just some extra strain.

i would agree that any of the SVT or even older SHO cars are sports cars....as would be the performance oriented saleen,roush etc.....but the basic mustang shares little with these cars, they are designed around performance and to do thing things a stock GT simply cannot do.

Its a muscle car really, its not a sports car. Regardless you can tow with it but the rating is something low like 800 pounds I cant remember. If you already own a truck its even more retarded, but you can tow with it and some people do tow with theirs .

Don't tow, the car wasn't designed for it. I even doubt if Ford considered that when designing the Mustang so use a hitch at your own risk. Also, considering the max payload (including passengers) is like 700 lbs, I doubt w/ towing you are going to be able to tow anything more than that. Also, consider that the trailer is weight that needs to be considered. Now, if you do tow, don't be surprised if the car is horrible at it. My friend tows w/ a his Cavalier and it gets 20 mpg, can't go faster than 60, and burns the clutch going up a hill while doing it. Though the Mustang is more stout, don't be surprised it's just as bad. Now, if you're worried about mileage, do something about the truck. 8 mpg towing is really bad, even if it's heavy stuff. My friend's dad's DRW, 8' bed, crew cab, Lariat F350 w/ the 7.3 diesel gets 13 mpg towing an RV trailer. Now, since you need to get a bike to the track, can't you just throw that in the bed of you truck? If towing is needed, no way the truck is going to get 8 mpg while doing it. Sounds like the truck is way underpowered. What kind of truck you have? Your best solution may be to figure out why the truck is getting bad mileage and fixing it or getting a more stout truck (like a V8 1/2 ton).

 

i love mustangs.....i have had many. from a beater '67 to a stripped down 86 LX with gt40P heads a B cam and a whole lotta nitrous....and now my current driver.....

i will not pretend it is waht it is not. it is a monumental car, a car that created a whole new market....the camaro,firebird, challeger, all were built to do battle with the mustang on the track and in the showroom.

but it was never a sports car.

 

the mustang is rated to tow 1000lbs....the bike is 402lbs race prepped. so unlees my trailer weighs over 600lbs i am cool.

 

man you will regret putting a tow pkg on the car, 1 it sits to low for going over entry ways and driveways with a trailer hooked up to it. I dont know what year stang your looking at pulling it with, you said that you have a 86 LX DD, is that what your using for the towing to be?

I have a 2000 Explorer we use for towing with a 8x12 trailor and that thing is hard enough to pull the trailor, now its not hauling a vehicle behind me...but your transmission is gonna feel the brunt of it, along with your brakes as well.

Just something to think about, I have seen mustangs at car events with trailer hitches on them, but they are the newer models that I think have a beefier trans. on them.
