Higher octane doesn't do anything but keep detonation away. Unless your tuned for above 87 dont use anything else as its a waste of money.

Yep,your just throwing away your money and probally making it not run as good as it could.

91 octane tunes should be run with a min of 91 if you don't have that you have I would assume 93 and should be using that instead. You can even add a bit more timing in too.

You only have 89?... damn.. colorado only has 91. where the hell is 93 and why does anyone need it? lol.

anyways, if you retard the timing a little you should be able to run 89.

...

wait for somone who knows more than me to confirm this before doing anything.

lol

We have 93 is Illinois and that's good for what about 15-20 hp for an extra $1.50 per fill up.

Nope octane doesn't give you horsepower it controls detonation.

really so it doesnt make any difference at all what octane i use on my gt? cuz ive been running 89 for a while b/c i heard it was better for my engine by a few other guys with stangs, they said their car will start to ping if they use 87 and maybe its my imagination but it seems like my car runs better with the 89 lately than it use to with 87

Unless your car is tuned for a higher octane, or you have detonation, use what the owners manual recommends. I use 87 in the GT becuase I don't have it tuned for a higher octane fuel. I used the highest octane in the v6 becuase it was tuned for it.

Yall listen, the man knows what he talkin about. ^
Octane is resistance to detonation. No matter how small the amount of detonation the knock sensors will pick it up and retard your timing to prevent engine damage. Higher octane fuel will allow your engine to add more timing which is more horsepower. So higher octane fuel is better unless you have a 87 tune and the ECM will limit total timing advance, no matter what octane you have in the tank.

wait... so the computer will detect the detonation and automatically retard the timing to adjust to 87 octane if yer sittin with a 91oc tune?

My friend runs 110 in his RX7. I tell him it's pointless because it really doesn't give the car anymore power. However the flames that shoot out the exhaust are way bigger and brighter with 110 than 87 and he has duel side exit so it looks pretty sweet

2v cars dont have knock sensors.

Well sorry for any confusion, but doesn't it gain some horsepower from 93 octane + a tune?

With a tune yes, running higher octane will get horsepower. Without a tune it is jstu a waste of money.

Like I said the octane doesn't make horsepower. The power from a tune comes from the tune alone, the fact that you need to run higher octane is to keep the detonation away as with a tune you are running more timing. So again the octane doesn't make any horsepower.

Sorry for posting bad info. I though that those two black things, one one each head were the knock sensors. What are these? They are mounted on a stud at the top of the head at the front. They have a single wire.

I think I know what your talking about, those are just engine grounds for the harness. only 4v cars have them. I think 3v cars do also, but us 2v guys don't have them.
