Default Got Quote For Gear Install. Does This Seem A Little To High?

Hey all,
Just got back from the speedshop I had been thinking of using to do my install of my 4.10 gears. With me providing the gears, and buying an install kit and gear oil from them, they wanted $513.00 total.

The AM description for the gears has this; Shop installation costs will vary, but we have heard numbers between $250 and $300. Be sure to work with a shop you trust for installations. So of course I was taken a little off guard there when they gave me that price. Even taking into account AM's cost for an install kit and oil, that's only $50.00 off, which would bring it down to a still whopping $460.00

So, what do you think? Continue looking around for other shops?

Keep calling around. I think I paid around 200 to 250 for the install.

$513 is a good deal for parts and labor on a gearswap.

$513 is a pretty expencive if you have to provide the gears and such.

That is too much if you are providing the parts and stuff. I paid $275 for gear install.

$500 to $550 total for parts and labor is about all you should pay from a good shop.

It was Springfield MotorSports.

I was going with them, because;

1- I've known of them, although not really about them, for awhile.

2- They're very close to me. About 10 to 15 minutes from home, and less than 10 from work.

The other place I was thinking of was Excessive MotorSport.

I've heard of them for a bit too, and they're within reasonable driving distance from me.

The original quote was pushing almost $800.00 before I told them that I already had the gears.

No wonder why. Springfield is probably the most expensive in VA. Excessive is fine for gear installs.

Went to Excessive last night to talk to them. $300.00 and 2-3 hours time, and I can be "like the installers shadow" if I want. They don't mind, and in fact they encourage, people to be on the floor and watch their cars get worked on. Install is set for this Saturday morning.

$300 sounds a lot better! I paid $240 for mine with new axle seals and watched the guy do the install the whole time, I supplied the gears, oil, and master bearing kit (replacing every bearing in the diff.). You'll LOVE the new gears

I will be paying about the same to get Ford to put them in for me. No one else will touch that price around here. pricey but atleast it'll be done right by a ford tech!
