Default Royal Purple 5w20 Question

I just changed my oil today. I went from Mobil 1 Full Synthetic to Royal Purple. I also used a K&N oil filter. Just by driving it a little, it seems alot more responsive than it was. It was running kind of sluggish as of late. The oil filter i had on there was a Champion or something, it sucked.

Anyone use Royal Purple? Thoughts?

The fact that the oil is purple is f'n awesome in my book.

I was also looking into this:
http://www.americanmuscle.com/royal-...r-coolant.html

Anyone use it?

The K&N is a total waste of cash since most of the features it brags about (except the 1" hex), is in the standard Motorcraft FL-820S filter for a 1/3 of the price. In addition, there isn't much of an advantage for motor oil to use the really high end stuff considering you change it out so often (unless you routinely race). However, trans and diff are different considering those stay in there for 30k+. As for the Purple Ice, that's also a good idea (I use Redline's Water Wetter).

I've heard Royal Purple was good, but not worth it.

I personally use Mobile 1 full synthetic w/ Mobile 1 Extended life oil filter on my car. I change out both every 5K miles.

How often do you change your oil?

When I used to work at an auto parts store, I got sent to "oil college" for a day to learn all about oils, filters and related stuff. One thing I really remember about the K&N oil filter was that it was primarily made for race applications or so they told us. It has a really high burst threshold, but its filtering capabilities where no better than any other run of the mill filter. One of the most highly recommended filters was the Mobil 1. I'm pretty sure there is web site where a guy took apart all kinds of filters and compared them...I'll see if I can find it

edit..found the link: http://www.knizefamily.net/minimopar....html#champion

Thanks for the info, some good stuff for all of us. Makes me feel good about my deal. I just recently bought 4 brand new Mobile 1 extended life oil filters for $30 w/ shipping.

I can not see how changing from M1 to Royal Purple, one could experience any difference at all. M1 is already one of the best oils according to opinions and some tests. I use M1 full synthetic w/ M1 filter every oil change, which is about every 3500 miles. I'm going to start changing at 5K miles or get an oil analysis done to determine the correct amount of miles/time that should pass before I should change the oil. Sorry if that is a little wordy, I just got done writing a lab report and it sucked baws.

the royal purple is a lot better than anything out there hands down i run it in my tranny rear end and engine. the reason it is better is because it has the synerlec chemical in it and the oil bonds to the metal even when you turn your car off at night and sleep through the night the oil is still bonded to the pistons and arms. also it reduces wear and tear on the engine. my vote goes to royal purple. just search the web they have hundreds on dyno videos, they even did it on horsepower TV. try it and you will never go back. Trust me.

OK....now it is time for the oil thread. I have read, read, and read on this subject for years. I have learned a lot and have come to believe the following:

1 - It is hard to separate the truth about oil from the marketing BS.

2 - Modern oils are all basically good.

3 - The value of synthetics are over-stated. They are generally not worth the added costs. Sure, many high-performanca applications use sythetic, but they also get their oil for free. (Like I said, "marketing").

4 - Synthetics will hold-up better in stressed conditions such as extreme cold climates and you can extend change intervals some. But there is no real benefit to using them.

5 - If it makes you "feel" better, why not use it?

6 - All oils are subject to combustion products. Better oils have improved additives that disperse sludge. You will often hear people say, "my oil is black" etc... It is SUPPOSED to be. Better that the sludge be dispersed in the oil then sludging up the motor. Naturally, after a point, it will become too loaded.

7 - Even the best synthetics can only tollerate only so much sludge. Some manufacturers, such as Saab, who used to recomend oil changes every 18,000 miles, now recomend 10,000 or less because they had problems with.....sludge.

8 - Most benefits of synthetics are only "perceived". While it may do nothing better, people think it does and this can actually have a positive impact on things like resale.

9 - If you want to get truly technical you should perform an oil analysis at pre-set intervals to determine when you should change your oil. If you did, you will see breakdown taking place around 6 to 8k on organic oil and a bit longer on full synthetic. For the most part, most people could get away with changing oil every 10k miles. People in the US change their oil much more frequently then anywhere else (marketing).

10 - Changing oil too frequently adds risk. Such as forgetting to replace the plug or not adding enough oild by mistake. Hey, it happens. BUT, replacing oil also gives the owner a chance to check things out by looking under the car and finding other problems.

11 - Only trust the independant studies. TV shows and mags get paid to do this crap. Follow the money and you will see where companies profit. Don't get sucked-in.

So, what do I do?

My Saab gets Mobil 1 ever 10k miles. Why? Because this is how I maintain my bumber to bumper 100k warranty. ONLY the dealer touches it. Yes.....I pay $90 for a stupid oil change, but I generally get FREE work done at the same time and the dealer treats us great (I guess they should for $90 - lol). They also tend to find stuff.....which they fix for FREE at the same time under warranty.

My Pacifia get organic oil every 3500 miles. Why? Because all my oil changes are free and performed by the dealer.

My Mustang gets Mobil 1 twice a year no matter if it needs it or not. Car sees about 5k miles per year. Why? Because I am a dope and it is my baby. I change it with the seasons for the most part. The car also has a blower and sythetics have been proven to help in high performance applications some.
