Automatic Transmissions!

Automatic Transmissions!
I've seen several posts about people complaining their autos are boring, and I hate driving my girlfriends automatic. I know things can be done, like recalibrating shift points/firmness and something about the valve body. Transmissions are not my area of expertise, so anyone who knows anything can teach me something. Basically what I'm looking for is:
-upgrades to improve performance
-upgrades to improve durability/strength
-recommended fluids, filters, calibrations, etc.
I would love to see this thread expand to cover different auto transmission options, like C4, etc, maybe contain information for swaps, gear changes, shifters, etc.
Anyone who knows anything about automatic transmissions, PLEASE SHARE!
thank you

The JMod is the only "shift kit" that should be done to autos. A tranny cooler is always a good idea. Temps should be kept around 160- 180*. Then youve got converters. Darrin @ bc-automotive.com, Alan, and Circle D make the best converters hands down. PI comes in last out of all of those, any other company really shouldnt even be considered.

My girlfriends car is an 01 V6, so it's a 4R70, but I don't want to dwell on her car, I'm trying to learn more in general. I know Kenne Bell makes a valve upgrade for Ford trucks with the 4R70, but really haven't looked deep into that or anything else.
Any specific tranny cooler, size, brand, anything like that?

+1 with the J-Mod and cooler. not much else to do besides a converter like 03 said.
dont use a tuner to stiffen shifts. thats what the j-mod is for.
i use a 24k B&M cooler on my car. its a tad overkill but i have some stall.

According to Jerry Wroblewski, Ford transmission engineer, the 4R70W was used in Mustangs 96+. The AODE was used in 94-95, V6 and 5.0. He posted this in the tech articles in the Thunderbird and Cougar Club of America site (www.tccoa.com).

So the Ford Racing would fall into that category?
Any fluid preferences? Regular/synthetic. Royal Purple, AmSoil, or just Mercron? Anyone have an opinion?
