if it didn't come with an 87 octane tune then you'll need to back the timing off a touch for lower octane gas.

I'll bet a dollar they recommend Amoco,Mobil,Sunoco for the same reason I like those... they're (or were... there's been a lot of merging in the past couple years that I didn't keep up with) primarily US oil interests. Amoco, conoco, sunoco, Mobil and Chevron/Texaco. Chevron's merger with Texaco kinda hurt my opinion of the big T but they do a helluva lot of drilling in California so they can't be that bad.

you only raise the timing advance if you're going to run high octane. If it's not pinging though there's little reason to retard the timing any. You could take it to a dyno shop and have them hook a datalogger to it and make sure your timing is set reasonably as well as making sure the AF ratio is sane. Probably not a bad idea since you have an unknown in the mix already.

i think there is some rattling or small knocking but i cant tell. could there be some carbon buildup on the cylinders and the computer just adjusts to it? from result of low octane on high octane tune?

drop 10% timing and see if it clears up. if not, take it to be tuned and stay out of the gas.
