Default gear install?

ok had a simple question on price of instal, got this deal and was wondering what you guys thought of the deal with the price.

'79 - '04 Solid Axle 8.8 ------------------- $550

Includes: FRRP (3.08 thru 4.30) gears, all new seals and bearings, Amsoil Severe Gear Synthetic Fluid, Ford friction modifier, Labor, Shop Supplies, environmental disposal charge and speedometer gear for '79 - '95.

'96 and newer require either a Speed Calibrator (manual transmission), $89, or an SCT chip programmed for the new gear ratio (automatic transmission) $300.

Sorry but Sales Tax is extra.

let me know if this is a pretty good deal, thanx in advance

extraordinarily high. gear install should be 250+bearings+lube. Bearing kit is 100 bucks.

Chip or speedcal is optional. Your speedo will be inaccurate without it but that's life.

Damn for 550 bones... I expect a new rear end and gears. I've had my done for around 200 bucks(Panhandle Per and DallasMustang). Here it's around 250 bucks, a friend of mine does it for 100 bucks if you supply everything.
Also if you go to a no namer mechanic, ask how many times he has done a gear install. If he says once or twice...just walk away...far away.

Austin,TX, how far away are you from Dallas? if close enough, go to DallasMustangs, they did my gears for 189 bucks, that was after everything.

I paid 300 for everything except the gears and install kit.

And I know it won;t matter in your case, but u can use the lil gear to correct your speedo up until the 97 model year. After 96 u can use electric corrector, but in 96-97 u could use either electric or the gear ot correct. I have a 97 and only needed the gear. Just though I'd mention that.

thanx guys.. i was planning on going with a gear kit from mt anyway, the one that comes with sct 2, royal purple and of course the gears. but was just curious as to how much is the going rate with the install...and would i need the bearing kit if i am around 37k on the speedo? some say yes and some say you can get by without it. anyways for the answer to the other ? i am about a 4hr. drive from dallas.

That's the kit I bought too.I'd say anywhere from $150 to $250 is what would be a good price.

If you got 3.73's that white plastic speedo gear will get you close to your actual MPH, if you got 4.10s' the white gear got you no where close to your MPH, it's better to get a speedcal for 98 and down cars, and a programmer for 99 and up cars to fix the speedo problem. I think with the white gear and 3.73 gears, i was still around 8mph off, with the 4.10 gears and the white speedo in my 95 GT like 20 mph off. With my 3.73 gears and speedcal, i'm right on the money.

while I'm sure my speedo is not certified accurate, it has to be within 1 or 2 MPH, because how I move with traffic, and what my speedo says im moving never changed when i had the gears put in. Of course I can't be sure, but I trust mine enough to cruise though speed traps with out slowing down, and I still have yet to be pulled over in my stang. *knocks on every piece of wood in the room*

With 3.73's from 3.27 stock your speedo should be off by +5-8mph if you've never had the speedo gear changed. That's also dependant on your tire and wheel choice.

how do you use this lil gear deal to correct speedo...does that mean you dont need to buy the speed cal at all

If you get gears, you find out which speedo gear you need, take out your speed sensor and you can see the old plastic gear and you just swap them out. the new one has more teeth on it so it spins faster to compensate for a gear change. But are they 100 percent accurate...maybe for 3.55 gears, still alittle off for 3.73 gears, and anything more you will be way off even with the speedo gear. with the speedcal you can get be maybe 1 mph off. you tell them you gear size, wheels and tires and they give the numbers to flip to, 1 or 0, if the mph is off, you tell them how much off and they will calculate it and give you a new setting, till your happy with it.

I wish I could find the prices you guys are saying for gear installs. I've had 4.10 FRPP gears sitting in the box for a couple months waiting to install. The going rate up here (in CT) seems to be $500.00.
I'm thinking of breaking down and paying it this week. I'm getting really anxious to have my gears and then be able to upload my tune from MT.

If that's the best price you can find in your area, i drove 2 hours to get one set done before, then sometimes we have to suck it up, though it sucks and pay it. As long as they do a great job of install.

post on the Corral and ask the experts over there where their favorite shop is that'll do it for under 300. www.corral.net

There's no reason to pay 500 bucks for it. I'd drive to some vacation destination and find a place there to do it for 300. Spend the time waiting just kickin it and postin' wit da homies.

I posted on Corral right after reading your response. Got no reply, so I just bit the bullet and made an appointment for Tuesday. This mechanic said to expect to pay around $400.00.
That summer weather is getting me anxious. Plus when I purchased the gears, I got the package from MT that included the X-Cal 2. So I've been waiting to upload my tune when the gears installed, because the tune included the gears as part of my mods and would correct the speedometer.
Can't wait to have my stang back on Wed with the gears and have my tune uploaded.

The things we have to do sometimes. Your dropping it off on Tuesday and getting it back on Wed? If they've done it before and good at it, it should only take 3-4 hours if it's not being a pain in the a$$. The one's i've had done, took about 4 hours. and had my car back that day.
Enjoy the new gears, it'll be fun.
