Exclamation Cai

If I got CAI and a performance throttle body w/ a tune how much do you think I'm looking @ for my 2001 cobra mustang convertible?

Edit: I'm not doing nitrous.

the cost way way way outstrips the gains you'll get. The last half dozen or so I did those mods to gained on average 10-15hp an nominal tq changes.

Bassani mid-length headers and a tune have been getting 15-25hp gains.

Are those numbers with a tune, like he said he would be getting?

yep. Keep in mind that's on california 91 octane gas at sea level so we have to tune a hair more conservatively than places where you can get 93 octane. On average I've seen 99-01's put down 275-285rwhp bone stock, and 285-298 tuned with a cai and some exhaust bits. The TB is a non-issue and replacing it has gotten people nothing or close to it. A CAI is worth usually 3-5hp by itself. The real benefits on 4V come from exhaust mods in my experience. The factory manifold is very restrictive and replacing the whole poop shoot system has been worth impressive gains especially after a tune.

Your results will vary a bit but those are consistent results that I've witnessed.

A buddy of mine did CAI, tune and the bassani headers with bassani X pipe and magnaflow's and netted nice gains. He was at 281hp and ended with 317. Torque productino was boosted as well but by about half the amount.

Ditto. if you can use 87, do so. The whole reason I started putting a 5.4 together was to run 87/89 octane and still make supercharger level power. Of course I've gone to higher compression pistons since starting the build-up (10.5-11:1) so I'll have to step back to the high test stuff but I'm also going a little more hog wild than I originally planned. Use the lowest octane you can without pinging for best power.

I wouldn't waste your time with a different throttle body. The throttle body for your Cobra is the same that is used on Mach's and lots of people on the Mach 1 registry are having issues with the new Accufab TB and the BBK one is just flat out crap. I also was going to put a Accufab TB on my car, but it's just not worth it.

I don't have any experiences with 01 Cobra's, but in terms of your A/F ratio being safe you probably won't need a tune until you add more than a CAI + catback....when you add a mid pipe that's when your A/F starts to get really out of whack...yeah of course a tune does more than just keep your A/F safe, and will add some power, but you probably won't NEED one until you add a mid pipe.

Just my two cents, but when you do get a tune....find a good tuner in your area and put the car on a dyno.....it's the best way to go and will get the best results.

I'll leave it to the v6 guys to answer that. My hunch says that unless you've gotten a handheld or dyno tune you should use 87 until you have reason to go to a more expensive lower performing blend like 89 or 91/93.

When you say ethanol are you speaking of E85 or just good ol ethanol enriched gasoline? If you don't know what E85 is, google it and then push for it in your state.

EDIT: +1 to jjtgiants.

Oh I had a Accufab TB on my 03 GT also and it was just fine, The 01 Cobra & Mach TB is completely different TB set up than the GT. The Accfuab TB's for the 01 Cobra & Mach just came out about 6 months ago so it's taken them forever and a day to release it.....kinda weird it took them so long.

Also, guys that did install the Accufab TB's showed 7-8 hp mid-range increase and I think the peak hp was 4-5hp higher.

When using an Accufab plenum and t/b the 70mm t/b will net you the best gains. When using a C&L Plenum and Accufab t/b a 75mm t/b will net you the best gains. This is speaking for an NA car.
