FRPP gears or no gears at all. Too many stories of Motive whining for my taste. Never hear of properly installed FRPP gears whining.

I have zero whining out of my Motive 4.10's. The key is proper setup.

I don't know the answer to the orig question.

I don't know about your experiences but 1 experience isn't sufficient to be calling BS. Go collect some statistical data then come back and call BS.

OK, yeah your right, Motive Gear is used by some of the most well known racers in the world. I don't know exactly how many. My dyno guy, who installed my gears, uses Motive exclusively, and set them up the correct way. I was there the whole time. The key is to set them up correctly. Any gear will whine if the time and attention to detail is ignored.

Not to start a flame war, but it is a 2 way street, where is your conclusive data?

Oh yeah, one more thing. If your FRPP gear part number ends in M, guess who makes it. That's right...Motive Gear. Check their web site (Motives that is), they list the OEM part number right along side their own. So, I'll go looking for more conclusive data now.

The dif in the two Motive gears is the weight of the gear. The performance plus gear is not as heavy, meaning less rotating mass to move. On a street driven car it makes no real dif. And I have Motive 410s in my car...not-a-sound...other than the SLP LM1.

Okie dokie, upon more in depth research, although without statistical substantiation <sp>, the trend seems to be that most people are under the impression that you can just slap in some FRPP gears without really checking by using some kind of housing size formula. But...there's always a but, those who do not install said gears correctly do, in some instances, experience gear whine. I did come across numerous posts of people who have both FRPP and Motive gears and without question, those who are happy with Motive, had them either professionaly installed or have done it many times on their own and checked clearances. Those who were unhappy, readilly admitted the fact that they had done it themselves for the very first time or had a buddy do it for them. I did come across a post where ol boy had a set of FRPP's that whined, and he also fell into the stat of being a newb to the black art of gear installs, and did not check clearances. So, that being said, I still say . Now, I am done with this particular hijacking.

As to the original question...dfroster hit it on the head, there are 2 "models" of gear. The expensive one being the lighter gear. For most street apps, you will not need that one. Unless you really want to spend the extra $$, I would just go with the standard weighted ones. And for God's sake, install them correctly.

I have zero problems with my motive 3.90s. If your mechanic isnt a drivetrain specialist, I wouldnt let em touch. Ive heard of plenty stories of ford AND motives whining, along with other gears like richmond (which are crappy anyways) and some of the others.

I'll concede that both can and have whined in practice. It's also likely that the Motive brand is cheaper in many places than the FRPP branded boxes (cuz Ford rapes us every way they can) which would naturally have people that are scrimping and trying to low-buck it buying them, doing the install poorly themselves or ending up with crappy installs because of bubba-the-wrench didn't do it right. So I'll call my own dislike of Motive as illogical and for no good reason.

Still... my first post was "Too many stories of Motive whining for my taste" so I'll keep buying my gears from FRPP and having them installed by a pro and nothing will change. I like many of you use word of mouth a lot in my decision making which is stupid of me but hey, I'm prone to do silly things now and then. Are we all in agreement.

Right on the money! And yes, I too am prone to word of mouth advice, and there is not a darn thing wrong with that. Yep, we are in agreement.

I like the way this ended. Classy!
