OK gear thread
Listen i have been around hear enough to know that 4:10's are the best but my buddy has a black 98 gt and i convinced him to get 4:10's he later talked to his uncle who is a macanic and he told him not to do that. The macanic said he had 4:10 and it was impractical for street use. he said gas milage and you shift every 2 seconds.
so can you guys please post (those that have 4:10) if either of those are that bad and if he sould do it or not! thanks

Mechanics don't usually deal with gears like that, so he is just ignorant, he cannot help it. I have been running around with 4.10 gears every day for over 2 years, I have NEVER had a problem with streetability. In fact, they are actually better, it takes much less effort for the engine to get the fat arsed cars up to speed.
I also do not shift every 2 seconds, here again, he is letting his ignorance show. I obviously only have 5 gears and I start in first, so obviously I'm only shifting a total of 8 seconds, then I'm cruising in 5th, I don't need to shift anymore...sheeze, every 2 seconds...what a :censored: ...
Seriously though, 4.10's are by far the best mod to do. Don't listen to Cooter.
btw, is it a 5 speed or an auto? Auto will do even "more gooder" with a 4.30 gear. Tell that to Cooter and see what he says.

At 80mph I'm at 2.7/2.8.

I have 4:10's. Driving in the CITY, i managed to pull 220 miles on my trip tac, i filled the tank with 12.1 gallons of gas.
so, that is 18.18mpg, and i romp on it quite a bit. if i drove like a granny im sure i could get 20mpg. i think the mpg that suffers is on the highway, but i wouldnt expect it to be more than 1mpg if you stay the speed limit.
4:10's are the BEST mod you can do for under 1000 in my view. xcept maybe nitrous.
They do shift quicker, in an auto. mine shift around 10mph, 20mpg, and 35mph on a granny launch.
but all in all, best bang for the buck, 100% streetable, you DONT lose control. the hit to the gas mileage is MINIMAL. 4:10 gears have a very undeserved reputation when it comes to streetability and gas mileage.
They are perfectly fine for street use.

in all reality.. .4.10 might be a bit much for a 5 speed... but your buddy will get a hardon every time he firewalls the giddy-up pedal so tell him to buck up and tell cooter to mind his own car.

i think you're the first person i've heard say that 4.10's are a little too much (first person that actually knows what they're talking about when it comes to mustangs at least).

yeah... it's a rare opinion but I do think they're a little much. Just my opinion.
If you have a 4V car, they're actually a decent choice or for a car that sees a lot of drag time but I still don't like em for street driven GT's without an auto trans. I've seen too many guys launch hard and over rev 1st gear because it's so short with 4.10's. If I were to use them on a 5sp, then I'd use a tranny with a 2.95:1 first gear and get my first gear top speed back up to a reasonable level.
I've used gears all the way into the upper 5.xx:1 range in certain applications but not on a muscle car. Sacrificing 1st gear usefulness just doesn't usually make sense to me. 3.73's or 3.55's are my normal choices depending on the power level.
and thanks for the compliment.

I don't know why I even reply to gear threads anymore, but 4.10s are NOT too much for a T3650 equipped, N/A, daily driven Stang that sees highway use. My mileage hasn't changed drastically at all. The fun factor has changed though.

I just got 410s in my 04, rpm is up about 400-500. First gear is shorter if you lay on the gas, but if drive "normal" it's hard to really tell you have gears at all. I Look at it this way...The reduction in gas will be a few mpg, the grin on my face when the pedal is pushed is priceless. Spend a few extra bucks in gas every week and enjoy the ride a lot more!
