as many of you know, i'm currently saving for my 4V swap, which will require a taller hood. does anyone have a experience with the fiberglass hoods or aftermarket hoods in general? is the install fairly do-able? do the springs need to be changed out to weaker springs so they wont crack the fg? is fg even worth it, or is carbon fiber the way to go? also any favorite designs? cowls preferred to ram air or heat extractors (a la '03 Cobra)? i love the look of the ram air hoods, plus they can actually be functional and pick up hp, but what are the downsides? i'm pretty open to suggestions....

plus the more pics the better, so everyone can get an idea, especially the SN-95's! post up!

 

In the new modified mustang mag they have a black 1998 with a sick hood on it. I think it is fiberglass but it has a big scoop alnost like the gt scoops only bigger.. it looks aggresive as hell.. ill read about it was wok tommorow see if i could find out who makes it

 

I just ask the shop doing the 4v swap again and they said I will not have an issue with clearance with the stock hood. I have the Griggs CF hood but holding off til a get the whole stang painted with stripes. Here is a pic of a test fit,I will be adding hood pins as well.

why would you need a new hood? its the same motor that came in the 96-98 a 4valve and they use stock hoods with little nostrils on them you will be fine. unless its a 5.4 4v then we can talk cowl hoods. which would be awsome.

 

Yeah your stocker should work just fine!

 

The stock 96-98 hoods actually have a bulge in them between the nostrils, but not sure whether its necessary or not.

Colorado as I was saying to ya if you end up going with the Aviator setup, you will need at least a 2.5" Cowl. VIS racing sells top quality Carbon Fiber products, on of the few to offer it for the mustang. Also check out www.hofibertrends.com they have a great product as well.

Lastly, if you want a stock OEM 96-98 Cobra hood try www.karkraft.com. They have surplus on the cheap.

I'm getting a Custom 1-off Carbon Fiber Hood (modified 2000R style), and a Carbon Fiber Spoiler (modified S281/Shinoda Boss Spoiler), and Carbon Fiber Trunk Lid.

Should save ~65 lbs.

i was reading "Mustang Buyer's Guide" or some general info book like that, and it was saying the Cobras had a taller hood to clearance the intake? maybe they were wrong?

i think you're thinking of the SVO hood, a cowl with a ram air scoop like the newer GT's....

so if no hood mod is required do i go stock hood for the sleeper look or fiberglass for the incredibly-beefed-up-kick-your-*** look?

 

The Griggs hood weighs 24lbs not sure how light it is compared to other hoods.

 

i'm pretty sure, the stocker weighs in around 60 lbs....

so there's a pretty hefty weight loss there

 

A Carbon Fiber hood is ~11lbs. The materials are more expensive, but you don't have to paint it.

 

isnt true when you paint f/g it never really matches your true paint color?

 

dunno if thats true, but any pic ive seen taht somone has painted their f/g hood looks stock color to me
