Almost. Going down the interstate on the way home the latch let go and it popped up but the secondary latch, where you have to lift the handle, caught it. I immediately flew over to the shoulder and thanked my lucky stars that it didn't fly all the way up. I've heard stories of hoods flying up and busting windshields, breaking the cowl and wipers, denting the roof, all kinds of stuff. I was lucky. I closed it and continued on my way. I've had this hood for close to over five years and never installed hood pins like i need to, so now I really need to consider it, x10 considering that I race. The hood is carbon fiber and weighs about 13lbs.

Anyone got some good hoodpin tips and advice? These are my first choice unless someone sways me otherwise.

Man I'm glad it did'nt come completely open an wreck your car. Those are some nice pins there. All pins pretty much do the same thing and attach the same way.

I had those installed on the first carbon fiber hood i had. If you take your time and do it right they look fantastic. I wish i had some pics here i could show you of them.

Here is the one main concern i have on these.

the bar you install the pins on is right behind the headlights, when pitting these pins on they must be at like a 10 degree angle because of the slant of the hood.

also, the curvature of the hood in that area is pretty steep, when they are installed they DO somewhat flatten that part of the hood.

as awesome as these pins are, my rec is to find another set that works a bit better. These would be perfect on a fox or maybe a new stang, but the new edge hoods are just not quite right for this setup.

that said, they CAN fit, and they DO look fantastic.

Hey, if you want to check these out, ill give you my set. It incluses both pins, the latches, the keys (they are the locking ones) and all the hardware, i MIGHT be missing a couple small screws that can be replaced at any hardware store.

I got my hood pins from AM only complaint I have is that they have a tad bit of surface rust but that could easily be fixed by spraying some clear and paint on them first. But they are overly a good quailty hood pins.

 

 

I'm still pulling the seat out of my ***, it was a pucker moment for sure. I have always been worried about the hood flying up since you hear about how important hood pins are with aftermarket hoods. Plus with my hood being so light, the wind catches it so easy, if it's on the prop any slight wind will lift it. I've never seen a hood where I can bounce it on my pinky.

I have a picture thread somewhere on here that showed my install of my hood pins on my 2000R CF hood that I had. Like Chris said the curve of the hood makes it difficult but we modified mine to a different area and had no problems.

FRPP hood pin kits are great and cost about half. They use a smaller circular top plate that works better with our curvy *** hoods. I have them on my car. The one glitch is you need to have the bottom nut (on the 4" kit) welded to the top of your radiator core support where the standoffs used to be or you'll never get the pin holes to clear the top plate. It works better that way anyway. I don't use a regular latch... pulled it off when I got hood pins. No use having a latch when I have two thick *** pins. for standoffs to preload the hood a little I used a little playdough to find the height then cut a bit of rubber hose to length and filled it with blue silicone. Glue to the hood and you're rockin.

yah, i put my pins in the holes for the hood bumper *****. i got some thick rubber tubing and cut it so it would act as its own bumper.

 

same here...didnt know that the cobra R's were too big for the pins to be in the normal spot.


were the pins bolted to the header panel...that thing is pretty weak.


well, I happen to have FRPP pins. I don tknow their length but they should be the 4" ones. Maybe I will be able to use the normal spot.

Haha I did this all the way down the highway goin 70 but I didn't notice it till it rested back down, I shat bricks wheb I noticed it. And yeah today sucked...someone hit my baby...

 

Well, the hood things scaring me as well, the heavy winds we had in KY mixed with 22 wheelers passing me oncoming at 70+ has been making my hood shake a great deal, it hasnt caught ur point but i think it will skip it.. Hoodpins are coming!

BTW those above look nice n sleek, if you dont want ur pins to be noticed. Most people want them to be seen.

 

no need for hood pins with a stock hood. The stock hood is heavy enough so it will more than likely never fly up.

 

Thanks for the all the pictures and tips, it helps since I'm finally going to tackle this. Having the hood pop up on me like that going 75mph was scary. I wouldn't want to imagine if it had happened if I had been going down the front straight at MMP at 135mph, the secondary latch probably wouldn't have caught it. They have even told me before there that it looks like my hood lifts up at the corners when going down the straight.

I'd like to thank Chris, jacktheriper, a bunch for offering to send me his hood pins which are exactly like the ones I want. Ranks right up there with the best Christmas presents I'm getting this year. I'm going to fab up some brackets like on Lances and combined with those hood pins will be sweetness.

I may have missed it but what does everyone recommend for the 2005+ Mustangs for hood pins. I have the aftermarket GT500 heat extractor hood. Thanks all.

Side note for Lances03SVT, did you really sell that Terminator? Damn that is one SICK looking car and are you upset now that it's gone? By the way what did you replace it with?

 

I don't think a good set of hood pins for a pre-05 car would change for '05+. FRPP is always a good bet. I like the look of the ones I listed at the top. If I were you however with the Shelby hood, I'd look into Shelby hoodpins like on the GT500 KR, I beleive they are the push down and turn style. They are probably very expensive though.

Yeah there's a reason stock hoods don't come with hood pins. They don't need them. He has a carbon fiber hood which is way lighter. Hood pins would just be a waste of money for you.

But it looks like unless you had the GT500 KR hood that they wouldn't work because they are recessed.

 

Where did you get a cf hood? i have a huge paint spot peeling on my hood and was considering a cf hood. thought it would look cool on a mineral grey stang. Thanks.

 

I bought my CF '00R hood from some shop online that was out of California, but it's made by VIS and Cervinis. You'd have to check the VIS website to see if they still make them, I'm sure they are available somewhere.

One another note. I've got some aerocatch hood latches that I need to install, then no more worrying about the hood flying up.

 

Got it from VIS in Texas. The Web site that I ordered it from is no longer there.

 

Does yours say Cervinis on the underside? You think they just used a Cervinis hood as a mold?
