intake question
When installing my new cai, i noticed that the stock one came with a small circular mesh screen before the mass air meter. This was obviously used to keep big elements of crap out of the engine, but do i need it on my new intake? I cant really imagine anything getting past the air filter, and it didnt specify that i needed it in the instructions, but i just want to make sure im safe.
That screen is more to keep stuff from hitting the MAF...Im sure it has its purpose, but I just never put mine in again, and havent had any issues. perhaps some other ppl have a different story to tell regarding this...id hang out and watch for more replies.
The MAF on my car has a screen as well. I was told that is not there for stopping debris, but for creating an even flow through the MAF housing. I removed it when I installed a CAI, and I noticed that the car seemed to misfire when it was cold. The exhaust would "pop" if I drove off without letting the car warm up for a few minutes. After a while it annoyed me so much that I bought a new housing. After the new housing was installed, I never had that issue again. Of course, Audi's may be a little more sensitive to changes like that, but I figured I would mention it.
As said, it evens the flow. It's what straightens the flow of air so that the MAF reads laminer, not turbulent air. Otherwise, you'll get problems (similar to when you have a curve before it).
