Changing directions, gonna go for 5.0
Hey folks!
I have an 04 Mustang GT.
I also have a kid on the way.
I owe a lot on the mustang and my payments are huge. So im working to get the overhead on the load paid up so i can sell the mustang.
Once i manage to offload the mustang im conna save up a couple thousand bucks and take out a 10k loan and buy probably an 89 Mustang 5.0, spend maybe 5k on it.
And i am gonna put one of these bad boys in it.
http://www.proformanceunlimited.com/specs/302_350dropAL.html'
5.0l 302, aluminum heads, 380hp at the crank. Im option for the option 2, so ill have about 375hp at the crank.
it "suggests" a tranny swap
So i have a few questions.
1) How much can the stock tranny handle on an 89 Mustang 5.0l?
2) Has anyone any experience with this outfit Proformance Unlimited?
3) Uhm, what other things should i expect to look into purchasing to get this engine in and running on the car?
I have a budget of maybe 12k. i figure 5k for the Mustang, 6k for the engine, so i will have a little extra for other needed parts.
This is going to be a real project for me. Not something i want to rush, and i dont expect it to be running immediatly.
The girl doesent want me to get rid of my stang cause i like it so much, however, with a kid on the way i can get rid of my mustang and get a loan to cover the cost of a car and engine and STILL be saving 400 a month, and have damn near 100rwp than i do now.

I can find you a 5.0 for sure around here. There are a few that probally have more RWHP than what that motor you want will be pushing.
I've seen some insane 5.0's around this area. And probally cheaper than what your looking to spend.

well i would have a budget of about 5k for the car, and 6-7k for the motor. for 100 more i could get a 351w with 420hp, but i dunno how much effort it woudl take to get it to fit.

Ive never done anything like this, i expect it will be quite a while untill i have it running, but i think it would be a helluvalot of fun to do something like this.
What would be sweet is if i could find one in excellent cosmetic shape with a bad engine. probably get a wicked deal on something like that.

yeah actually i really have no idea what fits in the 5.0's
i really dont wanna spend over 6k for an engine.
I could get that 351, have 420 at the flywheel, and what, maybe 370 at the wheels?
Thats in cobra terminator territory, and it aint even charged.

lol.....
i think the choice seems fairly obvious.
This place i put the link to seems pretty sweet. They send you pics of yer engine as they build it, you can get it in the color you want, they even send you a video of them firing it up in the shop.
about 6k for the 351.
If i can find a real clean 5.0l with a bad engine for about 2-3k ill be set.

well the mounts should line up... if you stray from a 302 you may need a bellhousing...
Uh the big things are axels, upgrade those if you plan on putting power to the ground...
The T-5 should be ok... If your worried then go get it built...
and you will have to clean up some wires... pull that computer... which makes it easy...
You won't need to get it dynoed... The carb adjustments can be done in your garage if ya know how to do it...
Ya'll want a bigger radiator too...
A 302 to 302 if a pretty easy straight foward swap... everything bolts up the same... ya'll run into little problems that you can work out on your own...
If I were you... Id buy a mustang... pull the motor, bore and stroke it... get a nice cam and some good aluminum heads and ya'll be set... Itd be more fun to build the engine yourself

So tranny upgrade is something i better look at while im at it then.
Well hell, if i get rid of the stang, find an 5.0 in good shape... pay it off... THEN put 10k into the engine AND tranny. lol....
the cool think about this is it would be a total project car. i got a reliable daily driver, so i could take my time with it and do it right.

If you go carb'd-
Its cheaper, easier to work on (in that way releyable) but burns more gas (unrel in that way)
EFI-
You can make more power, its more expensive, a headache to work on but if done right should be problem free...
NASCAR and dragracing still use carb'd OHV engines

carberated seems like the way to go.
Probably just rip out everything and redo the whole damn thing. lol...

different suspension as well... You cant put a heavier engne in a car and expect the suspension to be a-ok... same goes for drivetrain components
Chris... just make sure whatever you buy has a v8 in it... Whether its an LX, GT, or Cobra...
LX is a racers favorite because they are light...
and the LX was made with a 302... many people think it only came with non v8s... idk why

for 6 grand you can build a much better motor. pick up a DSS short block, a set of AFR 185's, a carb and intake of your choice. some medium quality valve covers and oil pan. you can do better yourself, i promise. you can have the machine shop set up your short block cam and all. you assemble the upper end, put a pan on it, drop it in. ide check corral for a deal on the stuff you need for a tranny swap/build. Ive got a tremec 3550 in mine and its a great tranny, itll be even better when im making enough power to put it to work. 12 grand goes a really long way in a fox mustang. check nmra, corral, mustang forums, keep an eye on the classifieds. i had to find a car on about a third of your budget, and i found a good car. just look over a few months and jump on the right car!

I agree. you can find a nice fox built from top to bottom in pristine condition for 12 grand if thats your price. you can expect a clean pristine body, built engine, and supercharged putting down 500+ if you keep your eyes peeled for a while.

so you may have to do more work on fixin stuff...
If I was you I'd do all the work myself... It ain't fun otherwise

lol... yeah... starting out all i need is something free of rust.
I dont really care if it runs or not, cause i will probably gut it out, have all the wiring holes for EFI and such filled in, smoother over, and painted.
probably keep any mods that came with it... Just rip everything out, sell the 302 and tranny (unless it already has a 351w and a TKO600 in it...), and work it back from the ground up.
There would definatly be a huge advantage to buying one that is already done...
But then again, this would be one hell of a learning experience. Go all carburated, new parts, take 2-3 years to build it up.
Im pretty muchy done remodeling my house, so now im gonna need a new hobby. <g>
Chances are i wouldnt race it except a couple runs at the strip myself then maybe get someone who really knows thier **** and have them run it to see what it CAN do without my lousy driving handicapping it.
Other than that, keep it as a powerful show car and a weekend cruiser.

ya'll be fine with the power... takes some adjusting... so take your time...
i think you should get a four eye personally...
take the stock 302... bore and stroke to a 331... drop some heads and a cam... get a nice 4 barrel holly... and maybe get some juice...
