dual exhaust on a v-6.. what u think?
I have been thinking about getting dual exhaust on my v-6 and a cold air intake.. am I wasting my time?
|
No, its your car, and I think a set of duals will open her up a bit, your never wasting your time as long as you want it. If it's a 99-04 you will need a Gt bumper cover for the cutouts. Just don't put GT or Cobra emblems on it.

Ditto from me! |
I have a black '04 sixer and a 3 1/2 inch borla dual setup with flowmaster 40's. The rumble really changed the whole feel of the car... Before you heard the engine... now it's drowned out by throaty roar of my exhaust heh... and I don't even have a midpipe... just stock cats. Wait till I throw in a prochamber...
Your best bet is to goto a custom exhaust place and just have them build a right side to your exhaust, the sixers come off the headers and merge into a y-setup and go straight back the left side through the crap muffler ford threw in. just have them build you a right side, throw on 2 flowmasters (or straight pipes, but they don't sound very good on a sixer IMO) and get some nice big stainless (not crappy chrome plated) tips. should run you $300, parts and labor. You could always buy a complete kit (midpipe and catback) but that'll run you more than a sixer is worth putting into unless you have the money to burn... ::edit:: as to the new bumper... just have them run them below your stock bumper, they look great there... I'll take some pics of mine and throw them up here one of these days.::edit:: |
Iceman, you don't have a full 3.5" exhaust, do you? Thats way too big for a GT let alone a 3.8. It's a 2.5 to 3.5 tips right?

It may help a little bit...but you are not going to gain that much from these two things...maybe 5-8 hp MAX on a Sixer....and the sound is not that good....Better than stock, but no where near a V8 with the same set-up! |
ya just 3.5" tips.
Ya they have two completely different sounds... Mine just isn't as throaty, it's more of a constant deep hum with very little thumps at idle... but at 2,000 rpm's it's pretty damn close to a stock GT. I'll take some clips when I can. |
.. I just bought a '94 stang its stock and havent really had much time to do anything to it.. you guys have any suggestions? besides what I mentioned =)
|
How much money are you looking to spend? What are yor goals eventually?
|
The v6 shouldnt have more than 2.25 unless you have some serious modifications. Even 2.5" is way to big.
I suggest Mac Flowpath mufflers, though no mufflers are going to sound *good* compared to a v8. Its going to get very high pitched at higher RPMs. |
2.5 is stock.... I'm sure Ford knows a bit about exhaust...
|
Is it going to be a very annoying sound?

 recheck your info there bud. I think it even may be 2" exhaust. DO NOT... I repeat, DO NOT get above 2.25" If you have any questions check out this thread at 3.8mustang.com http://www.3.8mustang.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63637 I wouldnt say its annoying, its totally based on your opinion. I loved it until I got the GT, then it just started sounding like crap for me. Here is a list of people who have installed exhaust on their v6, pros / cons, and some have exhaust videos. http://www.3.8mustang.com/forum/showthread.php?t=65566 |

Think about it, you are going from a SINGLE 2.25 to the dual 2.5 is a huge difference...horsepower will improve, but due to loss in backpressure, your torque is gone... as far as sound goes, back in the day on my 99 V6 I had flowmasters...had a terrible drone and did not sound good...on my 01 Roush V6 I had the factory magnaflows with a custom X...it sounded great at idle till about 4000...but all v6's get that annoying whine at high RPM's....I am afraid that your 94 will probably sound worse than the 99+ due to lack of good heads...I would say save the mod money, make it look good, and get a GT when you can afford it! |
Maybe your thinking of a prior year V6? I had a 2.5" pipe built and the stock s the same size... Who knows...
|
I've spent almost the last 2 years reading posts on the v6 mustang boards about exhaust to know what im talking about. You have to take my judgement here because I know I'm right. Don't mean to be cocky, its just the truth.
Unless you have some serious modifications (aftermarket heads, intakes, cam, etc) dont get 2.5", get 2.25. 2.25 comes stock on the Mustang GT, so if you can find the H pipe off a GT you can bolt that on, and that is the perfect fit. |

Hahah you know what I mean.;)
|
mmhmm suure

Some high pitched buzzing noises. Believe me keep those cats on and get either flowmaster, mac flowpath, or spinitech pro street.
|
I've heard the prostreets give out a rice burner buzzing sound above 3500 rpms... I don't know this for sure as I dont have them but the flowmasters I have do nothing of the sort.. just deep V-8ish growling...
|
No No... Do NOT take off the cats you will get an awful sound. Think about it. the v6 is an even firing engine. It's not a like a v8 with the odd firing. It's more like a 4 cyl engine. You run no cats you are going to get a continuous blurr of load loud neighbor waking annoyance. You will loose a lot of back pressure and the 94 only has so much power. you'll loose torque hence less move and won't pass inspections.
You arevery fortunate to have a 94 though because you do not have to replace the rear bumper. I'd say you're best pic for sound and looks is a Hpipe 2.5 inch dual exhaust with 40 series flowmaster mufflers. I know this because i've seen many 94's with diff exhaust and so far this sounds the best ;) and it's what i use on my 94 ;) I know my car inside and out. :) You can either have an exhaust shop make you custom pipes to GT OEM specifications or buy GT Take offs from a dealer like roush, steeda, or saleen that add their own exhaust and sell the rest of the parts for extra money. You can buy systems off flowmaster (lil costly) but saves a lot of hassling if you don't know what your doing. If you have the money just do this and save yourself the stress of looking behind every bush and stone to find the best prices. SO do Hpipe 2.5 inch exhaust with 40 series flowmasters. Good luck ^^ |
dual exhaust
I dont know how i feel about dual exhaust on a v6 no matter what you do you cant get the exact sound of a v8 so i think its almost better not to put it on.
|
No you can't get the exact sound but it's not a bad sound either, it's actually quite unique and if you are engine modding the duals are a must, let the damn engine breathe!
|
True
You do have it would be better if you were letting your engine breathe better but i grew up with a mechanic for a dad who has a 68shelby and a 72comet gt so i dont think a sixer sounds good compared to those
|
Oh I know, but the new modular v8s dont sound a damn thing like them old shelbies either, and talk about mechanic me and my cousin build hot rods, restored an 641/2 mustang. :) (some mean sounds from the 350) but I'll say with ym flows at low RPMs still get a nice growl with some throttle.
|
duallies
you seem like a pretty knowlegable guy and im fairly new to the car world but what kind of duals would your recommend putting on a v6 that just have a nice throaty sound nothing too loud. Thats sweet about your 641/2 old mustangs are the **** i love them,
|
We sold the 64 :\ like right after we restored it. same paint found it sitting on the original tires in perfect conditon liek never ran lol.
I would say for a low throaty sound depends on what you want performace or sound. Sounds like you want sound so... I would go for Well first all systems will sound like blarry and like a long blurr but that's because the system needs to be broken in. So I reccomend for sound H pipe dual exhaust with some aftermarket muffler. I did flowmaster and it's more loud than any I have really heard. But from what I hear magna flows make a low sound, but I remember ths guy with s 2003 v6 and magnaflow emblems pulled up near me i couldn't hear him at all :\. So I just reccomend what I did and everyone I know seems to enjoy even some car kids who know somethings mistake it for a v8. so i was satisfied. So Hpipe dual exhaust (leave cats on) Flowmaster or other aftermaket mufflers 2 1/4 inch piping and 2.5 inch tips. Kink the bends so you keep some backpressure for the six, so if they ask if yuo want mendral bent piping you say "no" and it's also less expensive :) That is just for sound not for performance. if you want performance I'll tell you something different. Also to change the sound add in a different Cam Lift :) But thats completely in the other direction and more of a performance mod but it has been known to change the sound to more uneven burbly v8 sound. However, the v6 is ultimatly an even firing engine and can't make the v8 sound ever lol. but it's still a good unique sound :D |
i was gonna look into flowmasters about 30 series but i thought i would get some peoples point of views so what mods do you have on your v6.
|
I've got a sixer with flowmaster 40's and no midpipe... It's quite impressive but I definitely need a nice hpipe or prochamber for the added sound.

Flowmasters sounded terrible on my 99 V6 IMO...way too much drone, and it never even closely resembled a throaty sound...
on my 01 V6 Stage 1 Roush, I had factory magnflows with the side pipes...it sounded great...and when i put in a Custom X (with cats) It was AMAZING...for a 6.... |

he's goign to get so many biased reviews. my Flows never sound drony in higher RPMs after they broke in. and you can't hear magnaflows. Spintech is good too. Mine always sound deep and throaty and I would make a multimedia of it for you guys btu i don't have the tehnology :\ |
