AM i doing something wrong here?
I keep my car pretty clean, i wash it every week, sometimes more if it gets road grime from rain. every other day i use a "Glossier" microfiber wipe and give the car a good once over to keep her shining.

Today, i gave her a good Maguires treatment.

Step 1, Maguires Tire Shine.

Step 2, Maguires Swirl Remover. Applied by hand with a Maguires foam applicator pad. Once it dried i buffed the rest off with a microfiber cloth (not impressed with this)

Step 3, Maguires Glaze, applied in small sections with Maguires foam applicator pads, wiped off before it could dry(per instructions)
with fresh microfiber cloth (yeah this stuff sucked)

Step 4, Maguires Gold Class Wax, Applied once again with Maguires foam applicator pads, excess buffed off with fresh microfiber cloth.

Now my question is, why the hell do i still have all these damn swirls???? This is the 2nd time ive used this stuff and it doesent seem to do jack crap. In fact, i think there are more swirls now than ever!!!!!

In fact, im rather unhappy with the performance of all the products i used today except for thier tire shine. (that stuff rocks)

Dont get me wrong, I got a good shine, and it looks sharp, but last time i waxed my car i used one application of Turtlewax Black wax, and the shine i got from that was deeper, wetter, and nicer than the entire Maguires treatment i used today. My car is garaged when im at home AND at work. I dont use the highway often.

does anybody have any suggestions as to what im doing wrong? or is maguires just some shoddy stuff?

Think i would get better results with a good random-orbit buffer?



Hmm.... think Mop&Glow would hurt the finish? Used to use that on out boots in the military for a nice sharp shine! <laugh>

Use maguires three step and you won't have any swirls. Then top it with some NXT and you should be dood to go.

An orbital buffer will give you better results. I did the three step by hand, and it removed alot of the swirls, but you can't beat an orbital or DA polisher. I second the NXT...better than gold glass.

IIRC, you're not supposed to let the swirl remover dry on the car, but that may only be for the 3 step.

I used the 3step too. Night and day difference. I'll have to try that NXT apparently...

i guess ill just keep my eye out on overstock.com for a good buffer, they got some kickass deals there.

i re-did my waxjob today using turtlewax black, the shine is so deep you can get lost in it. <grin> they swirls are still there though.

If you will try any Mothers product with an orbital buffer (Walmart $29.00) the car will look better than factory new! The trick, when applying the polish is to use the polishing cover and not the application terry cloth. Then use a soft towel to wipe off and shine. Throw away the other polishers/cleaners except tire dressing.

Don't let the Scratch X dry like wax, and work on small areas at a time. Rub in Scratch X until it disolves or becomes clear. Put about 5lbs of pressure on the applicator.

Mother's stuff works well too, I'm just a die hard Meguiars fan and I know their system. I have seen good results with people using mother's too.

Meguiar's is nice because it seems like almost every product they have fits in a progressive line from cleaning to polishing to final top coat, and everything in between.

FWIW, there really isn't any "polish" that gives protection...they're just that, a polish, not a sealer or topcoat...you'll always want to put a coat of quality wax on after polishing to seal the deal.

Eagle 1 offers a Polish/wax that protects longer than meguires nxt, gold class, nanowax, and most of the other ones ive tried. However the shine isnt there so I usually coat that first then NXT.

The reason it doesn't shine as much is because it's not a true polish. A true polish removes material, period. Think of it as the "2500 grit snadpaper" of the detailing process.

I steer away from "all-in-one" products. For the best results, you need to do each step separate from the next.

Zaino is good stuff, but it's pricey and not as readily availble (IE, I can't run over to autozone to pick more up). I also feel, IMO, that doing the full meguiar's system gives just as good of results. I've used both.
