Default Stall Converter

Hey guy's i am hoping someone here can help me out with a question.

i have a 97 auto GT with the transgo shift kit running b&m Trick Shift Synthetic fluid. I also plan on installing FR 4:10's. with this setup what speed STALL CONVERTER is best.

Also the only thing i know about stall converters is that they allow you to launch faster off the line. can someone explain how this works? does it have something to do with being able to hold the brakes to whatever RPM the converter is rated to?

I do not goto the track, but i love going fast and street racing.
The thing is that the rice rockets have a better launch than me, but i overtake them at around 45mph.

the gears will help your launches, a stall say 2500 rpm means your car will not move until the rpm's hit 2500. You launch at a higher rpm, higher in the powerband, but thats all I know. I would do the gears and if your still not happy do the converter. I'd do 4:10's tomorrow if money wasn;t an issue.

Stall rating is the engine RPM at which the rotor and stator in the Torque converter (the two vaned discs facing each other inside) are spinning at the same rate. It doesn't mean your car won't move till you hit 2500RPM. You can have a 2500 stall converter and idle off the line, just not really fast.

The wisdom I was given on stall selection is, the higher the redline and more aggressive the cam, the higher the stall speed should be. For a reasonably stock GT without upgraded cams and intake, 2500; coincidentally, should be just fine. If you up the cam duration and move the power band up you'll want to put in a higher stall speed converter.

if you have an NPI motor still dont go over 3200 stall. i would use a 2800 stall. id also remove the transgo and do the jerry mod. also get a cooler. the added slip from the higher stall creates heat.
