Default D*** these gears to hell

Well I just got my car back from the shop, and my gears wine worse than they did before. The mechanic told me he shimed the gears in and shimed them out and they stille wined. He told me he had the same gears (Motive PP ) in his camaro and they wined, so he just scraped them and bought some GM gears. To say the least I'm pissed, this has been the worst modding experience I've ever had.

I think what I'll do now is save up the money and buy some ford racing 4.10's and see if they wine. I think someone said that the ford gears are made by motive now, is this true? What are your guys opinions on what I should do now?

Whining gears means they didn't use ANY measuring devices to set the backlash.Go to someone that can show you a dial indicator and how it will be used to set the backlash.Aftermarket gears should run just as quietly as stock.

Well I just got off the phone with amcco transmissions. They said they nomally install gears for $650.00 (just labor). They said that they will look at my gears and see if they are repairable for $75.00, and if they are they would reinstall them for $325.00 wich comes out to be $400.00. Plus what I paid for the gears and barring kit, plus what I paid to get them installed the first time will come out to be around $700.00 if I don't have to buy a new set of gears.

My advice to anyone planning on getting gears installed is make sure, ABSOLUTLY SURE that the shop you get to install them will do a good job.

Its the installer, not the gear.

Winey gears mean ****ty installaiton job, or incorrect sizing on the parts, and its not the parts. By all means im not saying a quality job wont include the slightest bit of whining, but they arent going to be singing down the road.

i watched my car get taken apart 3 different times and shown how they did the install and how they first set the shims to match what was etched out on the ring and pinion. so i can say that my gears just like to make noise between 40-50 and at decel.

Me and a friend put in my clutch in about 3 hours. The clutch itself was 140.00. So not bad.

I had my gears swapped three times in my 95 GT, the first time they whined, it was no crap, the guy that installed them. Had panhandle perf. install the next set, they asked who in the heck installed the first set of gears, that says it all. They never whined, then i wanted more gear, so i had Dallas mustang install 4.10s, they never whined. Always ask the shop how many times have they installed a set of gears, and ask to speak to some of their customers that has had the gears installed. You'll save a few hundred in the long run.

A dealership no, but some performance shops will always have someone in there that had them do sometype of work, and they will happily tell you if they suck or not. And if they tell you they have installed gears mabe 3 or 5 times, hang up the phone.
