Yes, it is worth it.... Think of it this way, whenever you modify the intake and exhaust you increase power.... The more air, the more power... when you port heads, you increase the amount of air that comes into the engine..... and polishing takes away the turbulance involved with such a job..... which increases the hp even more.... as for specific gains..... depends onto which level you decide to port the head to.....

I know a guy selling ported and polished PI heads.... do the swap if you already haven't

I also know a guy in Texas whom ports and polishes heads for cheap... and is DAMNED good

no. its not worth it. the 4v heads are very good at flow already. thats why people with cobras dont by cams as much as the 2v'ers do. if you buy 4 custom grind cams and port and polish your heads you will not see a enormous improvement. its better to go with a power adder.
garth, he has a cobra, not a npi 2v.

so, unless your serious about racing and want every little ounce of NA power you can get, dont spend the tons of money

the best thing for you to do, NA power wise, is to buy the fr500 heads and cams from ford.

Only if you are going forced induction should you add a cam that would be worth it.

Default $500?

$500? This must be cash and carry - you drop off the heads already out of the car, they port/polish, you carry away and reinstall. Otherwise, makes no sense - I can't see how they could possibly make money. The reputable shops like Fox Lake are charging $750 for 4.6 2V head port/polish jobs - not including shipping or additional parts!

$500 for 4v port/polish job is GREAT deal - if its real.

I'd make sure they realize you have a dohc motor.

Hope its for real, of course - I'd jump at that price if they could really do a good job for that!

I would not venture to get the port and polish on a set of 96-98 B heads for an N/A application. They have more volume on the intake side then any other including the Ford GT/Cobra R heads. And are just not optimized for N/A combos. If your sticking N/A for a long time then just sell your heads and get some 99/01 C style heads...very similar to the FR500 both are Tumble Port head designs. You should be able to pick up some C heads for about the same price as you can sell your 96-98 heads. That alone will net you more HP then a port and polish will.

All any of these heads need is a good valve job and possibly new guides, oversized valves etc. if you go forced induction...and they're good for 800+ HP.

Also be careful who you let touch those DOHC heads. I would only use a shop with significant experience with the modular 4V. There are some real metal manglers out there.

Part of the reason my engine swap has taken a long time is the machine shop that works on 4v heads was backed up and the shop thats doing the swap will not let any other shop touch those heads.
