Default already searched...but..

I read that comp cams have a 5* timing advance in them. I never found anything about VT stage 2 needing an advance. I know you have to get a tune done immediately after installation, but does tuning have the same effect as timing? If not how do you "time" the cams? Some links or advice on what you all did would help, thanks everyone. P.S.I bought the VT stage 2 cam and Manley Springs, replacing the timing cover gasket, valve cover gasket, crank bolt, timing gears, chains, and plastic guides. One more thing...torque converter??? calls for a 2800 stall. Is that for racing specific, or for general use? I was planning on getting the 2500 brake stall and 3000 flash. Anybody else have that setup?

comp does grind an advance into their cams which allows you to in theory install them straight up. VT... dunno.

Don't forget you have to replace the cam sprocket bolt on cams with bolt on gears. They're TTY. ARP makes reusable ones IIRC. Timing the cams is a PITA if they're not dead on at the keyway. I've seen the keyway ground and welded to change the angle of the dangle and I've seen Fidanza style cam gears used. In either case you're changing the timing of valve events relative to crankshaft position. Similar to ignition timing but with cams the changes are more significant in their effect for the same number degrees changed.

red is talking about degreeing the cams in. Technically, degreeing and timing is two different things. Degreeing is A LOT more involved, and usually requries the engine to be pulled. However, I have seen some people claim to have done it with the engine in the car. Doing a basic timing of the cams is very simple, but sounds complicated.

Doing cams and converter is a HUGE step, and something you dont want to jump into without knowing A LOT. Not only for just installing them, but for purchasing the parts. I suggest you do a shit load of reasearch before attemping either install. VERY easy to screw something up.

Oh, and VT DOES NOT grind an advance in their cams. And that converter set up sounds like a waste of money to me. Do yourself a favor and talk to Darrin at www.bc-automotive.com.

cam sprocket bolt...i bought a new cam gear set because the windsor gears are pressed on, does the cam sprocket bolt come off of the stock setup or i have to buy a new one? So is just a tune going to be fine for my vt stage 2 n/a? I have a very skilled mechanic helping me, he owns a car club and does all the work for everyone. But he doesnt do the tuning so im doing that elsewhere, but i dont need to degree or change timing right? Just a dyno tune is good?

bolts... plural. If you bought bolt on gears you need bolts.

A tune and properly installing the cams and you should be good to go.

Yeah i got the cam gear set from VT along with the cams, so im good in the installation part. I talked to Darrin, VERY helpful person. Will be getting a 3800 stall converter for the setup. You were right, i was going to buy a 2500 stall from someone else(no names) which would have SUCKED for my setup plus im getting the 3800 stall cheaper than the 2500. Almost got ripped off by another company, Darrin was a life saver, i suggest him for torque converters!
