It's best to do it yourself because you gain experience and knowledge and if something goes wrong in the future you should know what to do and how to handle it.
But if you're thinking about installing gears yourself..don't. lol

It's made to sound MUCH more difficult than it really is, and its hardly worth $500 in labor to do...

the only thing i diddnt do on my mustang was the gears. wishing i did though. i figure it wouldnt be that hard after i managed to swap out the clutch in my honda.
yah, get a haynes or chiltens manual, its all just nuts and bolts.
now a CAM i wouldnt do myself. but just about anything else i would

I have done everything to my car, aside from welding in the subframes, and the tuning at the dyno after the supercharger install. I didn't have too much mechanical knowledge previous to my Mustang besides basics, brakes, oil, mosty maintenence stuff. Everything I installed on my car I did with a little research and alot help from ppl on here and a few other forums. I did the 4.10 gears too, even though many tried to scare me away from doing them.
Bottom line is if you have some sort of brain, research the hell out of it, get a good grip on what you are actually doing, own or can borrow the tools you need, understand how the parts work, you can do anything.

I've done everything on my cars, but the engine machining, welding and EEC tuning (as apposed to carb tuning). I bought a welder but haven't practiced yet, and won't on my baby. I've done gears, but will pay the $150 to have them done next time, too much headache getting them perfect. Even mounted and balanced my own tires, at my buddy's shop.
I've been asked "where'd you learn how to do that?" I really don't have an answer for that, no learning, I just do it.
If it weren't for me doing my own stuff, I wouldn't have half the stuff I do. I'm really too poor and cheap to pay a shop.
