Unhappy Am I ungrateful?

Hi guys over the last few days my Dad and I have had a little argument he says that by me modding the car it's ungrateful because it's like saying "what you got for me isn't good enough" so how do I argue that against him. Am I really ungrateful because I'm making his gift to me better?

Your dad may not be a gear head and will not understand why someone would replace or change parts on a car thats not broken. I think you are fine and your dad doesnt understand people like us. I have a friend that doesnt understand why I am dropping in a Cobra block but I tell him I cant understand why he would put Ralph Lauren Luggage bags that cost about $400 a piece on his wedding list. Since you live with your dad you have to respect his wishes but once you move out then you can do what you like. If you want to live a happy life after you move out of your dads house make sure you wife to be likes or understands your passion for cars. You also may want to go with him to a mustang club meet or local car show.

Its not that you're ungreatful, you're personalizing the car. As your dad got it for you, it was designed to appeal to everyone who came into the dealer (well, almost everyone). You just want to set yours apart.

What you need to get your Dad to understand is a Mustang itself is not a complete car... it's a base to work with... it's not a painting, it's the canvas for the paint to be applied.

If you were truely ungrateful you would have sold the car for something else. But you enjoy and value what he got you so much you're just trying to make it a bit better.

Ask him why he washes and or waxes his car. Why he paints his house or cleans the kitchen or washes the dishes. It's not destroying what you have or disrespecting it, it's making what you have the best it can be which is what you do with things you value.

The same with me. My father told me to buy an inexpensive car and save the rest for college. Fact is, you can save a crap load and it wont matter too much. when you move out on your own, unless you make a crap load, then you will be using some of that money for living rather than college.

Remember your father is trying to lead you in the best direction possible for you. In his eyes, college comes first. Which in some cases it should.

This is mean, but ask your Father buys clothing for you mom, or why does he buy her jewelry. One he loves her, but also he would like for her to keep a good appearence. You need to ask your dad to respect your wishes, and allow you some freedom when it comes to your car. Tell him you enjoy the car and appreciate it. However, this is your hobby, it is what you want to do. Tell him you could be a **** addict, gambler, or gang member. there are a lot of worse things you could be into like drugs, sex, and power.

Best option is sit down with him man to man and let him know how you feel. Trust me, he will respect you for that.

Man, this is a tough one.

You car to you is a hobby.

Your car to your dad, is just a cool car that he got for you.

If you were my kid, and I am a car guy (and a father), I would be inclined to not let you spend one red cent on it until you were out of the house and on your own. That would be my problem with it.

I lived like a pauper in high school so I could "save" for college... managed to have about 5k put away when I went to school... now I have 120k in college loans.

Live for the day. The few thousand you'll want to spend on your car aren't really going to get you far and the earnings potential you'll have after you're through college will make paying off 5k of loans so much easier. Enjoy life now.

You know, there is some truth to that. Provided you can still get to where you want to go in life.

Once you learn to manage your money really well, then you can start to mod. That is my thinking on it. Debt is a very bad thing to get into, trust me. If you can afford it, since it is your hobby, do it. You don't want to just keep saving your money your whole life and never have any fun.

This is true dont put anything on credit that you cannot pay in at least 2 months unless it has not interest. the $400 catback might cost you $450 if you cannot pay it down quickly enough.

Dude, I'm 33 years old and married and when I talk to my dad about all the mods I'm doing to my car he says that it's crazy to be spending so much money on a perfectly good car. He's just old school and does'nt understand. He never moded any of his cars either. But I think if you take your dad to some car shows he'll change his mind. good luck!!!

You should praise him for the car he bought you. I know a man who bought an 04 stang, V6 and he cringes of the thought of mods. He wouldn't dream of making it anything other than pure original stock. He is 49 yrs old and my best friend. I'm 45 yrs old and I would modify my stang as far as could on my budget. So far I got Mustang letters for my bumber. I got the premium GT package when I bought it. I am going to get a stripe kit really soon. I cant wait. :love4: Just tell your dad you are gonna make it a better mustang than the average joe drives.

Just keep it in the budget range (if you have one)! I cant wait to help my son get his first car looking and running great. BTW he still has 4 years to his license.

anyway tell Dad thanks for the stang. and mention that he made an excellent choice for you
